Time traveling in at number 16 in our “Side Project” series of beers is “Phlux Capacitor.” This wood aged bully is brewed to an unknown style from another dimension. Rumor has it that this beer was the first invented on planet Vulcan on Saturday, November 5, 1955 at 10:04 pm. Scribbled on the back of a sports almanac inside an abandoned Delorean. It is said that the speedometer in the car was frozen at 88 miles per hour and it took 1.21 gigawatts of power to jumpstart the car back to the future. We hope you enjoy our interpretation of this totally fictitious ale.

Big bottle from my neighbor Bob - Thanks buddy! Pours rich and heavy with immediate scents of caramel, brown sugar and a profound sense of sweetness. First mouthings reveal a good balance with just the right amount of bitters added to the dominate wood aged taste throughout. My wife shared the bottle and said she really enjoyed it, an unusual comment from someone who prefers things less rich and dark. I would gladly travel to planet Vulcan again for a second tasting.

Pours out a rootbeer brown color with a big, foamy, off white head. Aroma is of light chocolate, oaky vanilla, some alcohol and fresh plastic. Taste is dark chocolate, some odd earthy notes, liquor soaked cherries, caramel and some light traces of alcohol on the finish.

Dark brown with a thin off white head. Aroma is caramel and oak. It’s slightly peaty as well. Flavor is pretty complex. Big oak flavors with caramel notes. Nice bittersweet finish. Tasty little beer, flavors are bold but pleasant.

Pours a red-brown with an off white head and aroma of oak and malt. Taste is heavy on the oak, which comes up throughout, as well as toasted malt, fruits, and caramel. Complex brew, solid.

Pours a dark mahogany color with a nice tan head. Nose is woody and malty. Taste is malty, a little astringent and woody, but I am not a big fan of casked beers. Finishes on a sweet note. Save the wood aging for wines and whiskies in my opinion. Quaff Score 5/ 10

32oz Growler from Beverage World. Served at around 50F.

Pours dark red with a two finger light beige head that recedes to the tiniest of wispy caps and a ring and leaves some sheets of lacing behind.

Aroma features a lot of oak, some vanilla, cherries, dark fruits, toffee, caramel. Strength is on the weaker side.

Flavor is oaky, dark fruits, cherries, raisins, vanilla, toffee, some caramel, some herbal and resinous hops, moderate sweetness in the middle, good bitterness on the finish and a decent amount of alcohol burn as well.

Mouthfeel is medium-full bodied, a little sticky and oily, strong carbonation.

This is an oak bomb, and a pretty solid beer overall, but there are some quirks keeping it from being great: weak nose, hot, a bit messy at times.
