Pulling into Terrapin Beer Coís station is Pineapple Express, the winner of our first annual Employee Homebrew Challenge. Inspired by a late night grilling session with friends, a couple of chunks of pineapple got thrown into the mix, and an idea for a new beer style was born. The team brewed up a Helles lager for the base brew and used real pineapple and smoked malt to concoct the winning recipe.

Pours a very hazy, bright golden yellow color with a one finger frothy white head that slowly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Very good retention, taking a while to settle and leaving behind large streaks of soapy lacing. Slightly smokey aroma thatís subtly integrated into the characteristics of a helles. Unfortunately, Iím not picking up any pineapple but the smoked beer/rauch bier elements are delicately blended into the crisp hops, light fruit and pale malts of the lager. Hints of campfire, charcoal and smoked meat followed by grassy, earthy hops, hay, straw, bread and biscuit. Some apple and pear sweetness as it warms. I old have preferred more smoke and at least some pineapple, but overall the nose of this beer isnít bad. On the fuller end of medium body with a flavor profile thatís similar to the aroma. Decent smoked malt presence thatís prominent without overpowering the lager flavors. Hints of liquid smoke, ash and barbecued meat followed by crisp, earthy hop bitterness and a pale malt backbone. Nice grassy, saaz-like hop presence with notes of straw, hay, grassy pine needle and dank resins countered by light fruit sweetness, bread and biscuit. As it warms, the pineapple flavor that was missing in the aroma starts to stand out complimenting the other light fruit notes. Also, the smoked malt flavors become a bit stronger and linger after the finish. Overall, I was was pleasantly surprised by this beer. I would have preferred a bit more smoke but this beer has great balance and complexity with smoke, tropical fruit, grassy hops and pale malt notes bouncing off of each other.

Bottle to glass. Pours a mostly clear yellow light orange color with an off white head. Aroma is mild, slightly yeasty, smoky. Flavor is light malts with a smoky finish. Not much pineapple, if any at all. Granted, it wasnít the freshest bottle. Not my thing.

Bomber. A bit of a gusher, even though it was refrigerated. Very cool aroma of pineapple and mild smoke. Delicate on the taste. Very well done, and a neat concept!

Crisp, slightly hazy golden coloured body with a nice two centimetre tall off-white head. Aroma of smoke, alcohol, pineapple, malt, lemons and a bit of grass - nice. Medium-bodied; Pungent smoked notes up front with a definite complex characteristic followed by a very nice rich malt, alcohol, lemons, pineapple, grass and hay with a very dry finish. Aftertaste shows the amalgamation of those flavours with an emphasis on the smoked and dry notes and only showing a touch of fruit at the very end. Overall, a nice and rich beer with some good flavours, but very fitting to the front label - if you like a smoked pineapple or the sound of it, try this! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Vienna, Virginia on 09-August-2014 for US$8,99 sampled at home in Washington a few minutes after returning from holiday in Puerto Rico on 14-October-2014.

22 oz. bottle shared by some friendly locals. Pours a hazy pale yellow-gold with a huge white head. The smoke is so, so faint in this one, we assumed it was smoked pineapple and not smoked malt being featured. Pale malts, hay, pineapple, and florals are all present, as well. Light-bodied, with high carbonation and a dry, crisp mouthfeel. Neither as smoky or juicy as expected. Surprisingly restrained.

Taste from a bottle at phalesluís Weird Beers Tasting. 22oz bottle. Hazy golden orange color. Good bigger off-white head. Leaves good thicker lace. Pineapple, smoke in the nose. Kind of soft, stronger carbonation. Kind of dry finish. Kind of tangy, mildly tart taste. Moderate sweet. Light bitterness, some savory. Ok stuff. Texture is a bit much for me, a bit soft, and a mild metallic taste.

Bottle. Moderate grain and hay for the malt, light hop notes of perfume and grass, light soap for the yeast, with wood, pepper and pineapple after it warm a little. Head is small, fizzy, white with no lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is slightly hazy light amber. Flavor starts lightly sweet and lightly to moderately acidic, then finishes lightly acidic and lightly to moderately bitter. Palate is light to medium, watery with a carbonation between soft and lively. A pleasant Fruit Beer, without too much fruit.

Hazy golden yellow pour with a white soapy head that lingers. Aroma of pineapple, bread, and hint of smoke. Grain flavor with pineapple and smoke. Decent beer.
