COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pulling into Terrapin Beer Co’s station is Pineapple Express, the winner of our first annual Employee Homebrew Challenge. Inspired by a late night grilling session with friends, a couple of chunks of pineapple got thrown into the mix, and an idea for a new beer style was born. The team brewed up a Helles lager for the base brew and used real pineapple and smoked malt to concoct the winning recipe.

Crisp, slightly hazy golden coloured body with a nice two centimetre tall off-white head. Aroma of smoke, alcohol, pineapple, malt, lemons and a bit of grass - nice. Medium-bodied; Pungent smoked notes up front with a definite complex characteristic followed by a very nice rich malt, alcohol, lemons, pineapple, grass and hay with a very dry finish. Aftertaste shows the amalgamation of those flavours with an emphasis on the smoked and dry notes and only showing a touch of fruit at the very end. Overall, a nice and rich beer with some good flavours, but very fitting to the front label - if you like a smoked pineapple or the sound of it, try this! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Vienna, Virginia on 09-August-2014 for US$8,99 sampled at home in Washington a few minutes after returning from holiday in Puerto Rico on 14-October-2014.

22 oz. bottle shared by some friendly locals. Pours a hazy pale yellow-gold with a huge white head. The smoke is so, so faint in this one, we assumed it was smoked pineapple and not smoked malt being featured. Pale malts, hay, pineapple, and florals are all present, as well. Light-bodied, with high carbonation and a dry, crisp mouthfeel. Neither as smoky or juicy as expected. Surprisingly restrained.

Taste from a bottle at phaleslu’s Weird Beers Tasting. 22oz bottle. Hazy golden orange color. Good bigger off-white head. Leaves good thicker lace. Pineapple, smoke in the nose. Kind of soft, stronger carbonation. Kind of dry finish. Kind of tangy, mildly tart taste. Moderate sweet. Light bitterness, some savory. Ok stuff. Texture is a bit much for me, a bit soft, and a mild metallic taste.

Draft at Churchkey. Cloudy pale yellow color. Aroma of dusty and funky pineapple. Taste is tart and sweet pineapple upside down cake!

Bottle. Moderate grain and hay for the malt, light hop notes of perfume and grass, light soap for the yeast, with wood, pepper and pineapple after it warm a little. Head is small, fizzy, white with no lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is slightly hazy light amber. Flavor starts lightly sweet and lightly to moderately acidic, then finishes lightly acidic and lightly to moderately bitter. Palate is light to medium, watery with a carbonation between soft and lively. A pleasant Fruit Beer, without too much fruit.

Hazy golden yellow pour with a white soapy head that lingers. Aroma of pineapple, bread, and hint of smoke. Grain flavor with pineapple and smoke. Decent beer.

Hazy straw colored pour. Small white head. Some lacing. Malt and yeast in the nose. Fruity taste with some malt. Not much pineapple and no smoke.

Appearance: Pours a hazy bright yellow gold with a white head that subsides to a frothy thin cap.

Aroma: Smoky malt, banana, pineapple. Very Belgian wit like.

Taste: Pilsner/Pale German malt pop, nice earthy spicy Eurohops, a little fruit twang in the end with some wood smoke notes in the finish. Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, average carbonation.

Overall: Drinkable, balanced, but didn’t knock my socks off. I didn’t get much pineapple, appreciative of the smoked malt. Fun to try.

Pours a nice gold color with a decent white head. Odd nose with a bit of pale malt and pineapple. Didn’t get any smoke. No smoke flavor wise either. Plenty of pineapple though. A bit of bready malt too, but not much else. Finishes fairly clean. Eh.

Bomber from State Line. Poured turbid gold with white head. Nose was bready pale malt, mild hops and pineapple. Tasted a bit of a mishmash, with bready pale malt, some pineapple, and mild rauch, and although it was original as hell, it didn’t quite come together.
