Pulling into Terrapin Beer Coís station is Pineapple Express, the winner of our first annual Employee Homebrew Challenge. Inspired by a late night grilling session with friends, a couple of chunks of pineapple got thrown into the mix, and an idea for a new beer style was born. The team brewed up a Helles lager for the base brew and used real pineapple and smoked malt to concoct the winning recipe.

Bottle share at Proof courtesy of jbruner. Pours an odd vibrant yellow. Almost no head, but there is a thin white collar. Aroma is very muted light malt, a touch of some kind of other sweetness too, but it doesnít really remind me of pineapple. Taste is the same. Muted, faintly reminds me of sweet pineapple. Good beer, but nothing crazy.

Pours cloudy & gold with a thick white head. Aroma is sweet fermented fruit and pilsener-like malts. Taste is crisp & clean with a not so subtle smoke flavor up front. Some wheaty flavors quickly come out in the mid palate followed by the malts tinged with black pepper for the finish. Overall this is an easy, ínot too sweetí, bright, session beer with an interesting smoke background. Donít let that turn you away. Itís nothing like a heavy rauchbier. Like it.

Bomber. Cloudy straw color with offwhite head. Grainy, yeasty aroma. Pineapple and smoke are understated. Slightly sweet, a bit of a bitter finish. Creamy mouthfeel. Thought this was just OK, just thought smoked pineapple could have been more pronounced.

22 oz. bottle shared by Phatdog1. A white sticker placed over the original bar code reads 2-10-14. Nearly clear pale yellow with thin white ring of head. Aroma is light smoke, pale malt and a trace of fruit.

Flavor starts with a subtle smokiness, followed my light pale malts and rounded off by some lager yeast in the finish. Itís hard to find any fruit in the flavor. Texture is grainy and gritty. Carbonation gives a effervescent mouthfeel leading to a lightly linger lager yeast. Pretty refreshing, easy drinking, even for somebody who isnít a fan of smoked malts.

Bottle, from the Beer Dispensary, Apex. Ok aroma, sweet. Get yeast, doughiness, then smoke, then pineapple. Tad hazed orangey gold color. Ok head, faded quick, spotty lace. Sweet flavor. Light body, creamy mouthfeel, kind of sweet smoke finish. Itís ok, certainly not looking for any more of this, the smoke and the sweet really donít do it for me.....

Appearance: Pours a yellow clear.
Aroma: Aroma of light smoke.
Taste: Light sweetness from pineapple, light smoke.
Palate:Medium light body.

Summary: I do like smoke beers, and the idea for including pineapple was nice. I guess the balance between sweetness and smoke slightly didnít work for me. Good but not amazing.

Bottle. Hazy golden pour with a tall, foamy white head. Aroma is smoked malt, soft fruit notes, light grass and bread dough. Taste is softer smoked malt, a touch more fruit than in the aroma, smoky wood notes, toasted malt, light grains, bread and faint grassy notes. Body is medium with a light, bubbly carbonation. Ends with more smoked malts, baked bread, toasted grains, sweet malt notes, fruit and light grassy notes.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Sparrow, 3/28/14

Aroma: The aroma is smoked malts, yeast/spice, some doughy malts, and just a bit of fruit
Appearance: A clearish gold-orange color with a lasting, creamy, white head and plus lace
Flavor: Tastes much the same, doughy and malty, smoke and pineapple both noticeable and subtle
Palate: The body is light-medium, it has a smooth, creamy feel, and a soft carbonation
Overall Impression: This beer isnít at all what I expected. It isnít all that smokey or all that much of a pineapple beer either. Those components are there, but they are far from dominant. Interesting beer. Iím not sure how I feel, because it works but it doesnít live up to the promise of the name. I donít love that weíve called this a fruit beer either. Great pour. Solid beer. Weíll leave it here.

Aroma - kind of smoked, kind of corny. Appearance - yellow straw body; liquid is the slightness haze; head is white and about 1 1/4" Taste - is akin to a pilsner; there is smoked quality, but if you didnít know you might not pick up on it. There is a slight corny quality to it. Palate - body is light; the texture is thin; the carbonation is average; finish is quick and unimpressive.

Interesting. A lot going on with the pineapple, the smoke, the lager, etc. a little too much IMHO. Pineapple is interesting addition but us more prevalent in the nose and barely noticeable in the tounge. Very reminiscent of a wheat ale more than a helles lager. Enjoyable nonetheless. Very sessionable in quality but not in the 22oz release at that price point. Entirely too much cost for the goods. Terrapin should release this in their new canning line as a session ale.

22 ounce bottle. Pours a hazy yet somehow a little bright yellow with a nice wheat colored head. Aroma is not overwhelming. Has a light smokey taste which stands out most on the palate, but the pineapple was coming in more on the aftertaste.
