Tomfoolery “Black Saison” is the latest addition to our Side Project series of beers. Number 14 on the list, this ale boasts an uncharacteristic black color for a traditional Saison, but is just untraditional enough for our experimental mentality. Made with a silly amount of rye, wheat and black malts, this dark spicy beverage will quench the thirst of any court jester in the land. We hope you enjoy our light hearted attempt at making this traditional style with foolish brewing behavior. Spike’s Brewing Words of Wisdom: Beer is serious business…what you do after consumption often times is not.

Saison loaded with dark roasted malts. Aroma and flavor dominated by roast, some chocolate and maybe a bit of chocolate. Flavor is lightly sweet. Some floral and spicy notes. I would have liked it to be a bit lighter, though overall I think the alcohol is pretty well hidden. Not bad.

22oz bottle, thanks BeerandBlues2. Small tan head atop dark brown body. Aroma is moderately sweet, caramel, roast. Taste is moderately sweet, roast, some bittersweet chocolate, caramel, light orange. Light-medium body. Decent, but not really picking up the saison.

22oz bottle, shared with the Tallahassee Crew, great sweet aroma, caramel and chocolate, very yeasty, spicy and malty. Interesting.

Second to rate! Damn! 2/5/11. On tap. Black pour with lots of reds under a creamy brown head. Dusty, grainy aroma with a hint of fruity and yeasty Belgian yeast. Fruity and yeasty flavor combined with a hint of dusty chocolate and coffee with a dash of metal. Reminds me of a schwarzbier combined with a saison.

22 oz bomber. Pours a dark cola with a small beige head. Aroma of rye, wheat and dark malts. Taste of rye, wheat, black malts and earthy notes.
