Aroma is quite coffee-rich, mostly coffee grounds and espresso beans. Heavenly. Flavor of rich roasted malt with the nice coffee notes making their presence. It’s nice to see a coffee beer that actually tastes like coffee!! Smooth palate and quite tasty. A very nice coffee beer!

Flavor of burnt malt, the same coffee. Finish with yet more of that intense coffee bitterness along with some berries below it. All the coffee I experience is through beer, and the particular bitter, burnt portrayal of the coffee here can be a bit rough at times, but there is also a certain lusciousness to it, and the more I drink of it, the more I want to punish my tongue with all the bitterness and charredness. Suffice to say that it’s intense if nothing else. I feel like this one could go up upon a rerate, but I’ll play it safe for now. 7-4-8-4-16/3.9 For the rerate, suffice it to say I got all the luscious bitter coffee without ever feeling there was any burnt notes or overly harsh grinds notes that I did last time. gsteph (264), knoxville, Tennessee, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 23, 2009 This stuff pours pretty thick and looks a lot like over used motor oil. Inky black with some chestnut highlights, the head rises methodically to a one-finger mocha head. Heavy espresso bean nose, bittersweet chocolate and charred oat. The body is a little thin but very flavorful. A semi-sweet chocolate initially blasts my palate followed by a blitzkrieg of fresh espresso, dark berries, burnt sugar and smoke. Very creamy like a chocolate truffle. Finishes with an astounding roasted coffee bitterness. Very vibrant coffee approach to this one. Nice. jbrus (4863), Delft, Netherlands

Sweet, bitter, roasted, espresso, sugary, sticky mouth feel. Bit too sweet and too much coffee for me. coldbrewky (723), Saugerties, New York, USA

I’ve been shuffling this bottle about in the beer fridge and thinking about it with some aprehension since the coffee ingredient thing has me a bit worried. It seems that many overdo this ingredient or some folks live their bitter acid churning coffee. I enjoy my coffee...to paraphrase the Big Lebowski, but only when it doesn’t try to kill me in the process. So after a long weekend working outside on clearing the property of multi-flora rose bushes and preparing the future Hop Yard (three cheers for me), I sat on my porch, took off the work boots and popped this baby open after letting it sit for a bit and assume the right temperature. I was not dissapointed. As I type away here I have a very pleasant low buzz going on from this brew. It currently is assisting in the role of pain killer, since the damn wild rose bushes tore my arms up. Nose is of mellow coffee and some light hops. Black in the glass with a thin tan head that whisps away as if it had never been. No lacing, no legs. Upfront silky malts balance the gentle coffee input quite well. Some coffee acidity but not too much to turn me away. I could have easily downed another one of these. thanks again Matt. scrizzz (1269), kirkland, Washington, USA
