Reviewed 12/23/2012. 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. A: Pours a pitch black color with great opacity. The head is a one finger khaki color with low retention. On the plus side, this leaves nice lacing where it can. S: Itís very rich with coffee, as expected. There are also underlying notes of dark fruit, roasted malts, and plenty of chocolate. It really does strike me as being similar to a good mocha cappuccino. Actually, make that a great one. T: Well, it smells like mocha cappuccino, and it tastes like mocha cappucino. Man, this is fuckiní tasty. It starts off with subtle roast, before giving way to an explosion of bittersweet chocolate, dark fruits, and coffee - lots of coffee, actually. I love how it stays in balance despite all of the intense yet competing flavors. Iím amazed how the coffee comes across as being both subtle and monstrous at the same time. M: On the sweeter side of a stout in terms of how it finishes and lingers on the palate. There isnít much coffee or roasted dryness here - the oats dominate the palate with lush, decadent smoothness. The low carbonation is appropriate for this beerís profile. O: The only thing this really lacks is drinkability - but thatís more of a testament to the staying power of the brilliant flavors than anything else. This is everything I want from a coffee stout. I expected something great here...yet this is so much more. Itís bold and massive, yet thereís a real sense of finesse and sophistication here.

Bottle as shown. Pours a cloudy brown with small frothy beige head that lasts. The aroma is strong coffee roast, dark chocolate, and caramel. Medium mouthfeel with nice spice, roasted coffee, dark chocolate with sweet finish, very good.

2012 bottle. Nose of coffee, vanilla, chocolate. Nice lace on black. The body is a bit too thin, flavor of cola, coffee, vanilla, bitter finish. Good, but gets too thin and watery compared to the nose.

2012 vintage. Pours a completely opaque black with a big, creamy dark khaki head that sustains well and leaves good lacing. Aroma of rich chocolate, mild brewed coffee, sweet molasses, some vegetal and umami and a mild cellared quality. Taste has coffee, fudge, dark chocolate, a little cherry and mild roastiness followed by bitter bakers chocolate. Aftertaste has some charred roasty bitter and a little of the cellared notes and chili pepper vegetal quality. Finishes dry with roasty bitter that builds and lingers. Mouthfeel is creamy and medium/full bodied with low carbonation. Forgot to review this the first time I had it but a year and a half of age hasnít really hurt this beer as much as I feared. Iím sure the coffee has dropped out somewhat but the vegetal notes that coffee beers get with age were neither strong or distracting. This was a nice surprise and one I enjoyed very much.

Bottle thanks to RJ5020. Pours opaque black with a small brown head that dissipates fairly slowly leaving a ring that laces well. Aroma is heavy coffee, whiskey, roasted malts. Flavor is roasty, cocoa, anise, lots of coffee, espresso, medium sweet and light bitter, bit of ashtray. Fullish body, creamy mouthfeel, some acidity. Pretty nice.

Reviewed from notes. Rcvd in several trades. Sometimes this was poured into a nonic and other times it was poured into a snifter. For the most part, there wasnít any difference. The appearance was a nice looking dark brown close to black color with a decent off white foamy one finger head that had a decent amount of fading lacing trying to coat the sides of the glass but doesnít for the most part. The smell had a nice authentic roasty coffee of sorts with a decent light milk chocolate entering in on the side (as it warms). The taste was a decent light sweet overcoating some bittering hops. The aftertaste was super nice and roasty with a super nice dry roasty finish. On the palate, this one wanted to show me a decent light on the body, but for the most part, it sat closer to a medium on the body. Sessionability, hmmm...maybe, could have one or two in a session...hmmm...it wants to show a decent sipper quality to it, but for some odd reason, its not quite there. Overall, for the most part, this is still a wonderful brew to have and as someone who lives in Southeast Alaska, this is a super wonderful brew to have almost any time of the year up here because its never overly freakiní hot. I would love to have more of this.

Pours black with no head. Aroma of Folgers coffee and chocolate. Taste is the same with dark chocolate and roasted malts, licorice, and soy sauce. Complex, but not very pleasant.

12 oz bottle. Hot damn. The pour is black with a thin dark mocha head and no lacing at all. The aroma is damn good. Bursting with coffee and chocolate with a light boozy note to it. The coffee and cocoa just meld beautifully with just the slightest bit of licorice. The flavor is just as incredible. The roastiness just powers out with a fantastic coffee presence and a solid, solid chocolate note. The mouth feel is beautiful. Velvety and creamy with a beautiful carbonation and viscous clinging tendency. The aftertaste is all coffee, as if it were chocolate covered, and dry. 12 oz bottle. Thanks Darrell! Pours a pitch black with no light passing. Khaki head fades to a lasting cream glaze on the meniscus with dabs of lacing. The aroma is bittersweet chocolate with notes of coffee and roasted malts. Flavor is agressive - roasted coffee bitterness with chocolate syrup sweetness. Well balanced with a silky creamy mouthfeel. Clean finish.

UPDATED: MAY 30, 2014 2013 poured into a sniffer. Nothing like a little lunchtime beer to break up the monotony of a rainy Friday afternoon. Thick dark brown pour with a thin tannish head. Pouring it in the light, it had a bit of a deep maroon color to it as it came out of the bottle. Aroma hits you as your pouring it. Deep roasted malts, dark chocolate, brown sugar, licorice, vanilla, soy sauce and earthy aromas. Much more complex of an aroma than I remember from this beer. Itís been over a year since Iíve had one though. Flavor is more bold than expected as well. Charcoal, roasted malts, soy sauce, hints of bitter coffee on the back-end. Very bold flavors. As it warms up the coffee is becoming more prevalent which balances out the flavor a little more nicely. Feels thick in the mouth, nice carbonation.
