COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
When an apple has a uniquely satisfying and distinctive taste of its own, we believe it should stay that way. This is why Thatchers brings you a diverse range of single variety ciders which includes Coxs, a naturally sweet and juicy cider just as delicious and a Cox’s apple. Thatchers has been using traditional methods to produce fine somerset cider for over 100 years.

As I smelled this cider I was already convinced that this was my favourite cider in the world (so far). My companions sniffed, snorted and fell wide-eyed in love. Gorgeous yellow-gold colour with plentiful carbonation. Aromas and flavours of buttery apple, perfumy flowers, orange peel, caramel and dessert wine. It is like inhaling sweet nosefuls of apple peelings. Cox’s Orange Pippins are such a distinct variety and this expression captures it beautifully.

Cask at the Pommeler’s Rest, JDW, London. Pours a very cloudy, orange-gold with no head. WTH is this? You can barely this is cider. Almost like a golden ale. Very faint apples. Light to medium in body with soft carbonation. Dry finish, faint dried apples, light dry hay bitterness. Meh. Perhaps this is one to try again.

500ml bottle. Pours a clear, light gold, with a loose corona of froth, which dissipates instantly. Mild, dusty apple skin notes mix with some very faint citrus on the nose. Sweet apple juice is prominent up front, with a touch of lime in support. Medium-sweet apple follows, along with a very faint leathery flavour. Sweet lime lingers in the finish. This is a reasonable cider, if a bit one-dimensional. Nevertheless, it is crisp and refreshing, so it gets the job done, although I would personally prefer a bit more complexity.

Thin sour citrus apple smell. Thin clear yellow with average carbonation. Medium thin with a soft carbonation. Sweet citrus start with a medium strong sour finish. Macintosh apples all the way.

Audibly effervescent, surges to the surface with fury creating a ring of white. The body a sandy straw yellow and bright. Cardboard, dust, wood, lots of horse hair and hessian sack and an earthy apple tone on the nose that envelops the other aromas, dry and pleasant. In the mouth it is quite sweet, very tangy and tart with a good sour edge. Again there is a lot of horse hair and hessian sack amongst the supple fruit flavours. Creamy, light bodied and dry in the rear where it draws on the saliva glands. End is all hessian and apple core with the fruit dying off quickly. Claps out a little, noticeably astringent but doesn’t harm it in anyway. The sweet fruit flavours are great, builds more as it warms aiding its drier edge to give good balance. This is surprisingly easy to drink. I’d have no qualms in smashing back a few of these at a Sunday sesh. Not bad! (50cL, BB 04/11/12, Thirsty Camel, Butler)
