4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a dark brown color with frosty tan head. The immense hop taste mixed with natural roast flavor make this a brew for a hop head who loves massive flavor

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Nice brown coloured body with a touch of a coffee and cola glow at the bottom with a thinnish, one centimetre tall light brown head. Aroma of pungent grassy, herbal and citrusey hops with a lot of roasted malt noticeable as well. Medium-bodied; Chewy malt flavour at first with a nice caramel and toffee flavour, then showing some piney and grapefruity hops notes that show very well and finish with a robust, earthy maltiness with a lot of toffee and burnt sugars. Afftertaste shows some malt depth, a decent alcohol flavour after a few seconds and some nice, but not overpowering hops at the tail end. Overall, a nice Black IPA, but not one of the better ones I’ve had - still nice to try this one. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from BevMo (Geary Blvd) in San Francisco, California on 14-January-2012 for US$2.99 sampled at home in Washington on 11-August-2012.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pours a deep brown color with a finger of mocha colored foam. Aromas are rich chocolate, caramel and toasted malts with touches of citrus and grass. On the palate it follows the nose nicely but the hop presence seemed a bit subdued compared to other raters.... A bit too sweet for my liking but maybe the lack of bright hop flavors made the balance a bit off... it was an extra thrown in on a recent trade so Im not complaining !

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Phoenix: The balance was great in this beer. It is like Stone’s Black IPA with a little less toasted black malt. Doesn’t seem like a 7.4% beer. Good roasted malt, hops, and carbonation. I am enjoying these dark IPA’s even more now.
