Dark brown. Toffeeish but hoppy. Earthy and slightly berryish tartness. Good, kind of like a mild. Interesting pocket of beer exploring the gap between mild and porter.

Cask at The Botanist, Kew. An opaque black pour with a ring of cream head; aroma of heavily roasted chocolate malt; thin and watery with a chocolate malt taste; then a dry finish with lingering coffee grounds. A rather basic stout.

Gravity @ Wandsworth Common BF 2013. The pour’s brown with a small head. The nose is lactose, cream, some earthy dark chocolate and general roasted grain aromas. The taste is toasted brown bread. Mild chocolate, swiss miss mix. Burnt brown sugar, some dark fruits. Light body, fine carbonation.

A really nice, not too bitter stout. Black as your hat, this pours, with a good creamy tight head. There is little aroma, but the taste is of dark fruit, chocolate and a bit of coffee. There is good balance from bittering hops, but this is by no means a bitter, liquorice heavy variety, it focuses on being dark and smooth - and drinkable. Good stuff.

Pint pulled from cask at Pakenham Arms, shared with Finn. Jet black body, almost naked at the surface. Smell of liquorice on a backbone roasted dark malts. Wood and chocolate taste. Dry and not too sweet on the swallow. Satisfying (London, 01.11.2012).
