Cask at theBotanist, Kew Green - 28/02/13. Clear golden/amber with a thin off white head that clears to the edge and leaves a film. Nose is malt forward, grain, touch of hops, biscuit, dark fruits. Taste comprises dark malt, toffee, fruits, light background hops. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, smooth drinking, some bitterness in the finish. A decent flavoursome (best) bitter - veering towards and ESB in some aspects.

Handpull at The Botanist. Amberish gold with a smallish frothy offwhite head. Aroma is initially fairly diacetyl-forward, but it settles to a generic fruity grassy/herbal mix, no alcohol, not overly sweet. Taste has a bit more coating bitterness to it than I expected, bit still seems a bit twiggy and fruity, albeit green fruit (red currants?). Light body, a bit astringent, not much carbonation or finish to it. Okay indeed.

Cask at the brewpub, London. Pours clear auburn with a fine, white foam head. Big buttery toasted malt aroma with some toffee. Light sweet flavor with much less diacetyl coming through now, some nice and toasty caramel notes, slight whole grain bread. Light bodied with soft carbonation. Mild dry finish with more toasty caramel, faint butterscotch, faint toasty and leafy bitters. It’s a very nice bitter. Some people might get turned off by the mild butter notes, but a modest level of diacetyl is acceptable in a bitter like this.

UPDATED: OCT 11, 2011 Cask at the Botanist, brown with a fine lacy head and a bit of fruity malt on the nose, quite dry and bitter on the palate, with the slightly acrid bitterness lasting into the aftertaste. Re-rated on 11/10/11: chewy and a bit oaky on the palate, with nutty malty notes and a roasty hint, the bitter aftertaste is still there but more balanced and less acrid now. A nice best bitter.
