3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 SDbruboy (1864) - San Diego, California, USA - APR 29, 2012Nice mostly clear amber color, thin white head that leaves nice stringy lace. Bold hop aroma, toasty malts and brash citrus hops with floral and spicy notes. Flavor is dominated by the big, bitter hops, citrus peel, some pine and lots of herbally earthiness. Medium body and gentle carb. Had this as part of a taster set, and initially rated the pale ale as this, now it’s correct.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 womencantsail (6896) - Garbage Grove, California, USA - AUG 15, 2012
Pours a slightly cloudy orange color with a white head. Fruity aromas to begin with. Grapefruit, peach, and orange open things up. A touch of pine and grass followed by some hints of toffee sweetness. The flavor is a bit on the sweet side with a fair amount of toffee and bread. Good tangerine, grapefruit, and orange citrus character and a hint of peach. Light pine and rather mild bitterness.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 yespr (26042) - Copenhagen O, DENMARK - FEB 23, 2010
From tap at the brewpub. Pours cloudy golden orange with a small white head. Aroma is fruity and mild peachy. Dry peachy and mild grapefruity. A bit tea like. Smooth hoppy and fruity flavoured with a mild caramelish base. Nicely balanced yet to the hoppy side. Smooth fruity and slight bitter finish.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 CaptainCougar (7093) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - JUN 19, 2009
On tap at the brepub (mid-May 2009): Pours a transparent bright copper with a thin, wispy-lacing white head. Aroma of fresh juicy grapefruit and resiny pine with a touch of sweet caramel malt. Starts with good fullness and carbonation with a light malty sweetness giving way to big resiny bittering and flavor hop notes. Finishes slightly warming and bittersweet. A nice IPA.
3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 SamGamgee (2452) - down the whirlpool, California, USA - APR 18, 2008
UPDATED: APR 21, 2009 Draught at the brewpub. Gold with a small head, probably due to an overflowing pour. Super resiny, herbal, and piney nose; really smells like a shit load of dry hopping. The flavor is a blast of minty, herbal, and piny hops. Pretty dry and subdued malts. The lack of real malt assertiveness leaves the impression of chewing on pure hops. alright, but not my style for an IPA, with the less than flavorful malts.
Rerate: Gold with a lasting creamy head. Big orange and pine aroma. The flavor is still lacking though in that it is all pine needles and bitterness leading to a slightly uncomfortable finish. Too over the top; this one could definitely use some more balance.
2.6 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Charlzm (246) - Los Angeles, California, USA - FEB 19, 2008
Draft at brewery, 02/18/08. 7.3% ABV for this batch. Medium golden, some active carbonation, some foam atop beer. Aroma? Nope. Big piney hops nail your tongue right out of the gate. No other flavor comes out of this hop juice as it has its astringent way with your palate. Not a fan of this style.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 badlizard (5158) - Berkeley, California, USA - OCT 2, 2007
Tasted at brewery. Clear yellow amber with a fizzy head. Strong grapefruit and pine aroma and taste with a decent bitter bite and a hoppy perfume to the finish.
2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 riversideAK (5413) - Shoreline, Washington, USA - SEP 13, 2007
Gold in color. Very foamy head. Aroma is of sour hops, like sweatsocks. Flavor is a balance a caramel malts and funky hops. Rather average.
2.3 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 wetherel (1836) - Encinitas, California, USA - AUG 28, 2007
Very light amber color. Small lasting microbubble head. Hoppy aroma and taste. A blend of some grapefruit and other hops. A little bit of feet in the smell. Is the feet smell from the glass? No, it’s clearly from the beer. A bit of vegetable smell under the feet. Do I have to finish this 3oz sampler? It was difficult, but I did it.
I tried one more less appetizing beer: The Habanero Pilsner, but it wasn’t hot, so I think they gave me the wrong beer and I didn’t rate it. It was nearly clear and very corny.
Anyway, the other beers at the brewery are very good. You should visit despite this rating.
