Rue D’Floyd is one half of a collaboration between The Bruery and 3 Floyds Brewing Co. Both breweries being known throughout the kingdom of beer geeks for larger than life barrel aged beers, it was only fitting that this brew would be something of a similar scale. Working together to create a brand new recipe for an imperial porter at 14.4% ABV, the beer was then laid to rest in bourbon barrels for one year. Rue D’Floyd developed notes of toasty oak, vanilla and toffee from barrel aging, which was supplemented with vanilla beans, Portola coffee, TCHO cacao nibs and cherries prior to bottling. The result is a wonderfully balanced yet flavorful ale exploding with coffee, dark chocolate, caramel and dark fruit.

750ml bottle. Tart but not infected like the Three Floyds version, aboozy but somewhat enjoyable high gravity guzzler.

750ml bottle shared by MrPickles. Deep black body, deep beige head. Sweet coffee tinged with cherry chocolate aroma, rich. Bigtime full bodied beer, very good. Rich barrel tones. Lots of depth. Quite an enjoyable dessert beer. World Class.

Poured from a bottle. Aroma has a moderately strong coffee character with some nice background cherry and vanilla notes. Moderate chocolate and roast notes. Light oak and bourbon. Pours black with a large, moderately thick, dark mocha head that exhibits decent retention as it recedes to a thin film that is thicker on the edges. Light lacing and long legs. Flavor is fairly sweet with a lot of chocolate character. Light roast and medium light coffee notes with quite a bit of cherry character, more than I remember from the bottles I opened fresh. Medium light vanilla notes with light oak and light bourbon. Moderate bitterness. Some light leather and tobacco that don’t work amazingly well with the cherry, but are light enough that they don’t detract from the overall flavor too much. Mouthfeel is full bodied with medium carbonation. Low, but present astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, a better beer than the Floyd D’Rue but the cherry character comes off a bit medicinal and in my opinion clashes in the finish with the roast character. I don’t pick up any notes of an infection and this bottle has been stored at cellar temperature.

Big Sweet aroma. Dark medium thick pour. Mmm, it’s like drinking liquid chocolate covered almonds. This is amazing.

750mL bottle, pours black with a small brown head. Nose is a mesh of cocoa, cherries, vanilla and bourbon. Flavour is dense as fuck, like a black forest cake, with fudge, vanilla and bourbon. Very sludgy, thick beer. Good, but a bit too much for me.

Quite sweet smelling and tasting as expected, but pretty well balanced between all that’s going on. What starts as a coffee dominated nose quickly turns to cherry-vanilla, then chocolate as well. Nice sipper. Not quite the best beer of the 2nd quarter as rated on RB, but pretty damn good!"
