Bottle via mike. Nose is boozy. Moderate to strong cherry. Wow. Lots of passion in this beer. Thick. Sticky. Yummy.

750 ml. shared bottle. Pours black with a decent tan head. Aroma of malt, chocolate, fruit, and coffee. Taste is roasted malt, dark fruit, chocolate, coffee, and barrel. Wish I could have tried this sooner.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Deep black, thick as ink. One finger of graham cracker-colored froth becomes a sizable ring. Green pepper-like coffee aroma. Black pepper as well. Vanilla bean, milk chocolate and dark sweet cherry also make appearances. The flavor has all the character of the aroma, but with tons of additional cherry and vanilla sweetness up front. More sugar in the back end, very dark fruity -- cherries, plums, prunes. Alcohol, coffee and very dark, bitter, smoky chocolate hit before major sweetness rolls in. Medium-full body has nice viscosity, but breaks up in to quite a bit of fizz as it moves. Mild, peppery carbonation. Lingering sugars. There’s a lot going on in this guy. It tastes best before the swallow, where the earthiness of vanilla and bite of chocolate are noticeable, rather than after, where the sweet fruity notes overpower a bit.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
"The good one" poured black with a very thin head. This review is based on notes from almost a year ago so it was well within the "drink by" date on the sticker. Still, the tartness of cherries was the dominant note in the nose along with the typical bourbon and porter, chocolate and vanilla type stuff. On the palate, the fruit tartness is prominent and unfortunately it sticks around for a bit too long. Considering the infection issues, it almost feels a bit too tart. Who knows... Maybe it’s psycho-semantics, but then again, what isn’t?

750ml bottle. Tart but not infected like the Three Floyds version, aboozy but somewhat enjoyable high gravity guzzler.

750ml bottle shared by MrPickles. Deep black body, deep beige head. Sweet coffee tinged with cherry chocolate aroma, rich. Bigtime full bodied beer, very good. Rich barrel tones. Lots of depth. Quite an enjoyable dessert beer. World Class.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Poured from a bottle.
Aroma has a moderately strong coffee character with some nice background cherry and vanilla notes. Moderate chocolate and roast notes. Light oak and bourbon.
Pours black with a large, moderately thick, dark mocha head that exhibits decent retention as it recedes to a thin film that is thicker on the edges. Light lacing and long legs.
Flavor is fairly sweet with a lot of chocolate character. Light roast and medium light coffee notes with quite a bit of cherry character, more than I remember from the bottles I opened fresh. Medium light vanilla notes with light oak and light bourbon. Moderate bitterness. Some light leather and tobacco that don’t work amazingly well with the cherry, but are light enough that they don’t detract from the overall flavor too much.
Mouthfeel is full bodied with medium carbonation. Low, but present astringency and medium low alcohol warmth.
Overall, a better beer than the Floyd D’Rue but the cherry character comes off a bit medicinal and in my opinion clashes in the finish with the roast character. I don’t pick up any notes of an infection and this bottle has been stored at cellar temperature.
