We brewed this Saison-style ale with our friends at the newly opened brewery, Bottle Logic, located just down the street from our sour barrel warehouse. Being just as interested in style bending beers as we are, this not-so-logical beer was born. The base beer is a Belgian-style farmhouse saison, fermented with Brettanomyces, but that’s just where the fun begins. Our teams selected an unusual set of herbs to brew the beer with and then added as much raspberry and mango puree as we could fit into our fermenters. The result is a tropical Saison that is perfectly refreshing during this unusually warm California winter.

tried at recent bottle share. aroma is crazy good with mango, flavor is an odd mix of saison, sour, fruit and old ale. neat blend of flavors here.

750 ml bottle from the RS. Split with phatdog1 and friends. Murky orange color with a pink hue, bubbly head on top. Interesting looking in the snifter. The aroma is mostly odd raspberry with what maybe mango. Sugary, hints of yeast.

The flavor is actually better than I was guessing. Mango, peach upfront with a thicker Belgian yeast body. Decent medium in body with the fruity notes and sugar showing back up in the back end of the sip. Don’t really get any Brett funk at all, actually I was really glad it wasn’t a funky mess.

Draft at GM with Chris and wall streets. Pours an orange tomato soup body with no head or lacing. Aroma is mango and vegetables. Mouthfeel is thinner than the body suggests - notes of mango purée, veggies, green leaf, herbal character and sharp grapefruit soda. Lemon/like character.

Bottle: Murky, opaque tomato-ish orange hued, gray-tinted fizzly & bubbly film on top. Some juicy mango on the nose, generic tropical notes with the sharp acidity of the raspberry skins in the rear. Heavy cotton must, Brett yeast, & floral notes, too. Mild sweet-tarts. Smells more sweet than tart, though. Tons of that cottony Brett dryness & musk in the flavor. Woodsy, lightly floral. Hint of acidic raspberry, softer mango flesh underneath. Herbal, floral, & Brett-funk finish, heavy must & cobweb that settles with time & integrates itself to the fruits better. Lightly tannic, sharp, exceedingly dry mouth feel. Better than expected.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle. Aroma is very fruity with a lot of mango and raspberry character. Some light malt character with some medium light citrus and a moderate phenolic note of pepper and Thai basil notes. The phenolic character is interesting and reminds me of Asian cooking. Pours a cloudy, copper red with some orange brown hues. Big, medium thick, rocky head that recedes fairly quickly. No lacing and faint legs. Flavor has a slight acidity with quite a bit of mango and raspberry character. Some light, bready and grainy malt notes. Moderate phenolic notes of pepper, basil and some other spices. Light alcohol character. Moderate bitterness. The fruitiness doesn’t work well with the bitterness and phenolic notes in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low, but present astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a great aroma but the flavor doesn’t work well. The phenolic character is too strong fro the fruit and they clash a bit. As I drink more, my palate does adjust to the phenolic character and it gets more drinkable.

Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate floral notes, light-moderate herbal notes, light raspberry, faint mango (could be power of suggestion), and a hint of lemon peel. It pours hazy (bordering cloudy) a small off-white that quickly fades to a minimal film. The flavor starts with light raspberry and a hint of mango. The finish has light-moderate floral notes, lime on peel, herbal notes, and a touch of pepper. It’s light bodied with mild carbonation.

A pretty fantastic combo of fruits. especially on the nose, which is decaedntly fruity. Mango and raspberry. with just a hint of underlying funk. Very refreshing on the palate, even at 8%, and a little more spice & funk, and juuuust a touch less fruit, in the flavor. Wouldn’t mind getting this again..."

Bottle shared with the epic. Aroma of melon and rose petals. Pours hazy peach with light white lacing. Taste is mellow cantaloupe, rose petal, light biscuit, and a light brett/baking soda finish. Light and harmless but truly strange. Wouldn’t go out of my way.
