Pours like black syrup. Intense nutty, roasted, rum notes. And again mint. Mint, rum, sweet-roasted stout notes. Aniseed is there indeed. Syrupy feel, fiery alcoholheat. Not my taste - infected?

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Deep black. Thick-looking. Not much head, but what does appear is a deep reddish-brown like clay. Sweet aroma. Maple, ginger root, orange peel, vanilla bean. A little heavier toward the zest than the barrel. Rummy. Black strap molasses rum, rich and maple-heavy. Vanilla bean is less prominent than in the nose, but still rounds out the flavor a bit. Orange is big, blending with the vanilla in a sort of chocolate version of an orange julius. Finish is impressively clean and dry, with lingering spice bitterness. Moderate CO2, lighter body than expected. Fizzy. I tried this beer on draft when it first came out -- it was a spice rack, huge on the ginger, cinnamon and orange zest. I don’t know if it was the time or just the difference between bottle and keg, but this version is vastly different and vastly improved.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Black with a minimal beige head. Aroma is chocolate, orange liqueur, rum, nutmeg. Full bodied, lightly syrupy mouthfeel, reasonably well balanced on the palate with a slightly boozy finish. Taste is Grand Marnier, chocolate, orange peel, rum. So orangey.

Draft at the Bruery. Pours deep dark brown with a fizzy beige head. Tastes very rich, like burnt coffee, booze, roasted malt, licorice, espresso, and dark bitter cocoa. Light/medium body and carbonation. Smells like coffee, cocoa, licorice, vanilla, and spice.

Ever-polarizing, I actually liked this one. Buying many bottles probably bumped me up the list to be a Hoarder this year as well :)
Pours think and dark with a thin head. The aroma is almost entirely spiced rum, but there is a licorice note that is quite strong as well. On the palate, there is an almost minty quality that compliments the spiced rum flavors, but the downside is the extremely sticky mouth feel. You almost need to drink water in between sips. Still tasty though.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
[2/18/15] Draught at The Bruery in Placentia. 2014 edition. Opaque black. Aroma of chocolate, wood and lots of rum and alcohol. Sweet flavor with chocolate, wood and lots of boozy rum. Medium to full-bodied. Good, but too much boozy rum for my liking.

2.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
En fût sur place: Une base chocolatée robuste mais complètement renversée par un déluge d’épices à rhum et de sa chaleur. Aussi intense que désagréable.
