Floyd D’Rue is one half of a collaboration between The Bruery and 3 Floyds Brewing Co. Both breweries being known throughout the kingdom of beer geeks for larger than life barrel aged beers, it was only fitting that this brew would be something of a similar scale. Working together to create a brand new recipe for an imperial porter at 14.7% ABV, the beer was then laid to rest in rum barrels for one year. Going with a "spiced rum" theme, additions of vanilla bean, orange zest, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, star anise, nutmeg and fresh ginger were added just prior to bottling. The result is a fantastically robust ale with hints of citrus, rum, chocolate, molasses, exotic spices and toasty oak.

At the taproom: Dark pour with small brown head. Big fruity nose with spice. Flavor is all over the place with spice, prunes, hint of vanilla and touch of chocolate.

On draft at the brewery. Dark black pour, with a thin head. Milk chocolate, rum, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, oak, boozy, and sweet malt. Big, chewy, and sweet. Not bad for a rum barrel aged.

Bottle... Pours black with a small, creamy, khaki head. Smells like a marriage of Captain Morgan spiced rum and chocolate - loads of vanilla bean and cola nut. Full-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and tickling carbonation. The flavor features a moderate measure of burnt bitterness and tons of boozy, sweet rum and vanilla. Boozy, bittersweet, toasty finish. Thanks to landhoney for sharing this delicious brew!

On tap at The Bruery. Almost black in appearance. Strong, spicy rum notes in the nose with vanilla, oak, zesty fruit, toasted malt, licorice, light molasses and fall spices. Full bodied with a light boozy finish. Good.

Dogbrick (10872) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - SEP 3, 2015
Sample at the Inventory Reduction Beer Tasting on 08/08/2015. Deep dark brown color with a medium thick khaki head that recedes gradually. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. The aroma consists of oak, chocolate, malt and spice. Full-bodied with flavors of oaky bourbon, roast malt, dark chocolate and cinnamon. The finish is sweet and boozy with a spiced rum/bourbon and malt aftertaste. Pretty good beer all around.

Pours like black syrup. Intense nutty, roasted, rum notes. And again mint. Mint, rum, sweet-roasted stout notes. Aniseed is there indeed. Syrupy feel, fiery alcoholheat. Not my taste - infected?

Bottle at all killer no filler. Pours jet black with a quickly disappearing brown head. Aroma is ginger, booze and something resembling chilli. Taste is ginger, cardamom, chilli heat, gingerbread, slightly doughey.

750 ml. bottle. Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of malt, chocolate, spice, and alcohol. Taste is roasted malt, chocolate, spice, vanilla, coffee, and run. Not infected, just missed the mark.

Deep black. Thick-looking. Not much head, but what does appear is a deep reddish-brown like clay. Sweet aroma. Maple, ginger root, orange peel, vanilla bean. A little heavier toward the zest than the barrel. Rummy. Black strap molasses rum, rich and maple-heavy. Vanilla bean is less prominent than in the nose, but still rounds out the flavor a bit. Orange is big, blending with the vanilla in a sort of chocolate version of an orange julius. Finish is impressively clean and dry, with lingering spice bitterness. Moderate CO2, lighter body than expected. Fizzy. I tried this beer on draft when it first came out -- it was a spice rack, huge on the ginger, cinnamon and orange zest. I don’t know if it was the time or just the difference between bottle and keg, but this version is vastly different and vastly improved.
