3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle at Syb Pig Club bottle share. Thanks! Small snifter. Pours a dark brown with some small head. Aroma is very malty, boozy, cocoa nibs, dark chocolate, spice, and rum barrel. The star anise really shines through. The taste though...man I was expecting more. Besides the anise, it is a glob of chocolate, rum barrel, booze and thick malts. Full body, spicy rum finish. It just felt lacking though.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap @ The Bruery. Fantastic aromas of big tropical rum, oak, toffee, coffee beans, blueberries and barrel wood. Appears black with no foam at all. Taste is chocolate, oak, toffee, brown malts, cocoa nibs, nutmeg, spices and honey. Finishes sweet with massive tropical rum booziness, spices, vanilla, coconut and heavy barrel wood characteristics. Overall, this is a real treat. Very well balanced with huge complexity. A+ rating.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Looks much more like a stout with the dark brown foam and oily body. Smells terrific with chocolate, toasted oak, and cinnamon aromas. Rum soaked malts make the alcohol presence known but the middle and finish are vanilla and cinnamon. A little burn at the end. Nice.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
750ml bottle pours an inky black with a ring of brown head. Nose has a ton of clove and allspice, tons of sun tan lotion, ginger, nutmeg. Smells like a pumpkin beer. Flavor has a ton of sugar, spiced coconut shavings, loads of clove, heavy caramel, some char, some burnt cake. Hot, sticky finish. Messy.

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Dark as night, huge aroma and flavor (for better or worse) of rum and spices (ginger, anise, allspice...) and rum. A little hot, but expected given the abv. A little overboard on the pirate theme. I’m torn between giving it points for uniqueness (it WAS a cool beer) but taking away points for low drinkability (nobody was wanting MORE) and we split a bottle up pretty good. Cool experiment...probably a bit overboard with the spices. One I’m glad I tried but would not have again
