5 Golden Rings is the 5th verse in our ’12 Days of Christmas’ winter seasonal ale series. This is the only golden ale in the bunch but it definitely packs a holiday punch. We spiced up this 11.5% ABV ode to Winter with cinnamon, allspice and ginger along with some delicious sweet and tangy pineapple.

750 ml bottle purchase a year ago at Holiday Wine Cellar ($10.79). Pours a dark orange-amber hue with one finger of white foam. AROMA of sweet fermented pineapple, white wine (sauvignon blanc), Belgian yeast (reminiscent of Duvel), and some holiday spice. FLAVOR of overly sweet pineapple (like the heavy syrup in canned pineapple), some unfortunate metal-acidic element, spice with ginger standing out, and rather noticeable big alcohol. Rather cloying finish with some lingering booze. The aroma is pretty good, but the flavor is distracting and falls short. I liked the others in this series, but this was a disappointment. (213, 831)

750ml bottle in a tulip. Pours hazy copper with a lacy, off-white head. Aroma of pineapple, spices, spicy yeast, other light fruits, some hints of alcohol, and caramel malts. Flavor the same. Average texture. Not the best blend of all the components.

Bottle poured a nice orange color with a coating of white head that fizzled back. Aroma has ginger, cinnamon, big fruit sweetness, pineapple, malted sweetness, Belgian yeast, and candied christmas fruits. Mouth feel is hefty and the carbonation lower than expected. Flavor unfortunately is too sweet, over spiced, and smacks of alcohol. The pineapple is big, tons of ginger, mixed spices, Belgian yeast, banana, and a long lingering finish. It did improve quite a bit once it was in the glass for a while aproaching the drinkable level. This was the first Bruery beer I got suckered into for quite a while but reading the description I figured a sweet Belgian beer with fruit would be something that they would pull off. At least this was one of the less expensive Bruery beers.

Bottle at Cecil Late Fall Monster tasting. Pours hazy golden with a creamy white head. The aroma is sweet candy, spices, cinnamon, apricot and oranges. The flavor is bit cloying sweet fruity, spicy with some alcoholic notes. Sweet fruity finish. Bit cloying overall. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Very hazy deep amber beer, little white head. Softish and viscous palate. Stodgy and tangy ripe fruits. Bruised pineapple. A little black pepper and yeast. Semi dry finish. Tinned fruit aftertaste. Overall it’s a bit sticky and stodgy with too much over ripe fruit. The pepper is nicely judged though!

Golden pour with a small white head. Aromas of citrus and pineapple with spices. Flavor is sponge cake and pineapple. Really well made, the flavor is so interesting. Finish is a bit warm from the abv but I bet it will mellow out nicely over a few years. Very complex and wonderfully made.

Good but not great. Lots of pineapple and orange on the nose with our spices. Sweet and dry on the finish easy to relax with but a little too dry
