This beer is made in the pumpkin beer tradition, except instead of pumpkins we used yams, and lots of them! A big Belgian-style brown ale of 10% ABV, this one is bringing pumpkin beers (or yam beers) into new territory.

Bottle shared thanks to richthevillan. Dark copper beer with small head. Aroma of sweet malts, some spice and toffee. Taste is pretty much the same. A moderate amount of carbonation. Decent.

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines; hazy light copper pour with a frothy tan head, aroma has dark fruits and vegetables, taste has a hint of spice, some caramel, some herbal action.

Bottle, been looking for this! Pours clear deep amber with very nice beige one finger head. Aroma is sweet, candied sugar, burnt sugar, yams and slight earthy notes. Then comes the spices! Canned ginger, cardamom and slight cinnamon. Some dark berries and toasty malts. Taste is well balanced! Doesn’t get overly sweet due to the molasses and maple syrup, but certainly got the caramelisated qualities from the syrup and dark sugars. Yams are there and same earthy notes, almost like the peel of yam. Toasty malts and slight chocolate. Very present ginger, slight anis. Full body with good carbonation and only slight sticky. Slight parfumated. As it warms the nose reminds me in a funny way of banana cake! It just hits the balance! Would like to try it all fresh! Really well incorporated alcohol.

UPDATED: MAR 22, 2015 In cracking the bottle I find Belgian yeast and deep molasses, the aroma is dark and earthy, penetrating my senses, luring me closer. The pour is fascinating; a liquid nutmeg flowing into the glass, followed closely by a fizzy and quite audible, latte-hued foam. It caps the beer and threatens to make its rapid escape, and it does! In so many moments, the head is almost a memory but for the wisps floating lazily on the surface; it is easily resurrected with a spin on the stem of my glass if I feel a need to sip through some proper suds. The first sip is slightly unexpected, as I was waiting for a much more sweet experience. OH NO! Umami...wonderful, warm, leathery, savory, umami. I do love this more than all the other taste sensations that there are to find in a beer, as much as I do love a good bitter IPA. (Yay!) I find the brew biting the edge of my lips, almost a burn, but not really, and then flowing through, mellowing into an almost chewable sensation at the back of my tongue. The yams have definitely become a part of the flavor, bringing multiple spices into play with them and yes, encouraging the idea of turkey and mashed potatoes with loads of gravy and stuffing. The medium body of the brew is nicely carbonated and is not terribly spritzy, the chewy texture almost a necessity with the entire premise of the beer. The finish is long, lightly doughy with a hint of allspice to come around and keep me dry enough that I’ll just need to keep on sipping. I don’t mind...this is a tasty beer that almost passes as comfort food. I’ll take it!

[2/18/15] Draught at The Bruery in Placentia. Nice deep red color. Aroma of winter spices, malt and caramel. Sweet flavor, malty, caramelly and spicy, with some alcohol. Medium-bodied. Not my thing.

A really interesting brew. Pours a lovely burnt orange/brown. Aromas of pumpkin.. Or in this case yams. Also fall spice and maple syrup. I was not expecting this to be a tart ale. Sweet pumpkin, syrup, and tart cherries. Weird, but good.
