In January of 2009, a homebrewer and microbiologist named Al Buck won our Batch #50 homebrew contest with his incredibly complex gueuze-style ale. We knew this beer wouldn’t be easy to re-create, but the perfect layers of classic barnyard funk and lactic sourness were impossible to resist. Nearly 3 years later, after brewing the beer once in 2009 and a second batch in 2010, after adding various strains of wild yeasts and bacteria to the barrels and the bottles, after blending multiple batches back together and well beyond our release of Batch #300, we’re finally prepared to release Batch #50 – Grand Funk Aleroad. Brewed in the classic Belgian Gueuze tradition of barrel aging and blending multiple vintages of lambic-style ale, Batch #50 is one of the most rewarding beers we’ve ever had the opportunity to brew.

Thanks to Saucer Sam for sharing this bottle. The beer pours a yellow color with a few white bubbles. The aroma has a good bit of leathery funk to it, as well as some lemon notes and a bit of wheat. The flavor is similar. The funk notes are fairly strong, but I also get some tart, acidic lemon character. There is also a bit of leather, as well as some biscuit and oranges. Medium mouthfeel and low carbonation.

Looks nice, a hazy golden, very minimal head. Nose is great! Lots of lemon, wet hay and other funk. slight sweetness with more and more citrus. Taste is nice but not great. Lots of hay and lemon...wheat body and some spiciness. It’s pretty good but truthfully, very one-sided taste, and not a great mouthfeel. Glad it’s not hugely sour.

Bottle. Pours a hazy yellow with thick frothy white head that diminishes quickly. The aroma is a strong funk, oak, and lemon zest. Thin mouthfeel with nice tart lemon, nice funk, lingering sourness. Crisp, easy to drink, very impressive.

On tap at Sucréversary 2014. Pours a cloudy yellow with a decent foam. Nice sourness from lemon, berry, and mustiness. Finish is fruity and only a little tart.

Bottle with thanks to dbuckingham! Pours hazy golden with minimal head and basically no lacing. A lot of sediment in the bottom, so its possible to get a murky pour if that is your thing. Aroma is fruity, light tart lemon, oak, woody, some funk, musty basement, horse blanket. Medium body, basically flat. This is a pretty interesting beer.

Big ups to atlaggie for sharing this one. Lots of tartness here and you get the idea on first whiff of the aroma. Touch of cherry and lemon fruit in the flavor. The tart lip smacking texture though comes through and dominates the palate again. Bit of funkiness. Would like a little more depth and complexity.

Bottle via notes from an office tasting a year ago. Pours a cloudy and frothy yellow to orange with moderate white head. Aroma is barnyard and hay. Taste is more of an acetic sour that overwhelms. The barnyard again comes in and is one of the better horse blanket bruery beers.

Bottle @ Scooper Tasting in Ulfborg. Pours hazy yellow with dirty brown sediment and quickly vanishing white head. Clear, vinous aroma. Sour and vinous taste with faint notes of malt. Sourish aftertaste. Decent but tastes more of an unblended lambic.
