From The Bruery:

“For our first local collaboration beer of 2013, we teamed up with our good friends at Beachwood Brewing in Long Beach, CA. We’ve worked with these folks on a number of small batch brews, beer dinners and general shenanigans for many years and it was really exciting to sit down and work on a full scale project with them for the first time. What we ended up with is an imperial smoked stout, but of course it wasn’t that simple. We smoked our own malt on the same smoker and with the same blend of three different woods that Beachwood uses for their award winning BBQ - apple, white oak and pecan. We then aged the beer on those same three types of wood. The resulting stout is hearty and wonderful, balancing the rich, meaty smokiness with the sweetness of the malt.”

750 ml bottle from bev4less. Pours a dense black color with a small tan head that has fair retention. The aroma is kind of muddled with indistinct mocha, grains and light smoke. The flavor, unlike the aroma, is a powerhouse with many complex tastes--such as bitter walnuts in the forefront followed by chocolates, mocha, vanilla, plums, anise, campfire smokiness and more bitter nuts. The palate was full sliky smooth and viscous, just perfect, and the carbonation was soft. Finishes long and dry with lingering bitter walnuts and anise. Overall: Top shelf stuff, I loved it.

Bottle: Thanks, Kevin. Black body, inky & dark with a thick, bubbly, porous, long-lasting tan head capping it off. Sweet liquid smoke aroma, mild smoked meat with a campfire essence, beachwood, faint maple syrup, chunky chocolate, & a solid base of roasted malt & coffee beans. Big-time earthy smoke & chocolate malt flavor; charcoal, ash, & smoked wood with an undercurrent of light sweetness, almost syrupy. Old, smoked out campfire wood finish with some very dense, highly bitter cocoa beans & roast. Medium-heavy body with a solid presence.

Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate dark chocolate, caramel, light molasses, and faint smoke. It pours a dark brown with no transparency and a two finger tan head that eventually fades to a thick film. The flavor starts with moderate chocolate, molasses, and a touch of caramel. The finish has light-moderate roasted malt, light smoke, and a touch of coffee. It’s medium bodied with mild carbonation.

Taste from a bottle at phaleslu’s Weird Beers Tasting. Very dark brown, near black color. Thin light brown bubbly head. Great big smokey savory aroma. Dark chocolate, heavy roast, some chocolate. Moderate to bigger bitterness, mild hint of tart. Light to moderate sweet. Alcohol works well. Good roast, coffee. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, lighter carbonation. Good chewy texture. Lightly slick finish. Pretty awesome smoked imperial stout.

"Not sure how they smoked this, but I’ve had others WAY smokier than this. It’s actually a nice, if mellow, stout, especially for the strength, but the name left us wanting more. I DID only have a 4 oz sample, but I have a 750 at home and will revisit one o these days... Two bottles later...one of the rare ocassions not only where the bottle is better, but significantly better. Still super smooth and easy at 9.5%, but the smoke is more obvious and complex in the bottle than that first time on tap. Very nice."

Bottle... This beer rocks!… Pours midnight-black with a mid-sized, creamy, cappuccino head. Good retention. The bouquet consists mainly of fudge and coal smoke. Full-bodied and silky with gentle carbonation. The flavor is deeply roasted, furnishing carbonic, burnt malts and a scorched, bittersweet finish. This is truly an interesting world-class effort!

750 ml bottle acquired via trade. Thanks! Shared with deyholla. Pours a rich deep opaque blackish hue, dark and ominous, fairly thick with frothy light brown head. Decent layer sticks around ok, laces ok overall as a decent film. Aromas are cocoa and dark roast, cocoa nib, touches of coffee, decadent fudgey darkness meet some smokiness, wood and roast elements. Some richer depth shows mellow smoke, though it’d be more intense. Initial richer, fuled body. Some jet black roast, sweeter black malts and caramel. A lighter body than expected, the smoke elements come in a bit more firm. Wood, gentle campfire and ash meet some coffee, roast, cool toastiness, gentle mesquite and firmer ash/woody smoke elements. Not all that meaty. The middle is silky but full in body, glides over the palate as decent roast and smoke gives some carmelization, cocoa and biscuit, caramel and some sweetness at times. Touches of pretzels, toast and lingering smoke as we start to finish. The smoke element is nice but not overdone. I was under the impression based on reviews it was the opposite. Finish is dry, a bit roasty with lingering earthy smoke. I’m impressed. A solid offering with firm but not overwhelming smoke.
