From The Bruery:

“For our first local collaboration beer of 2013, we teamed up with our good friends at Beachwood Brewing in Long Beach, CA. We’ve worked with these folks on a number of small batch brews, beer dinners and general shenanigans for many years and it was really exciting to sit down and work on a full scale project with them for the first time. What we ended up with is an imperial smoked stout, but of course it wasn’t that simple. We smoked our own malt on the same smoker and with the same blend of three different woods that Beachwood uses for their award winning BBQ - apple, white oak and pecan. We then aged the beer on those same three types of wood. The resulting stout is hearty and wonderful, balancing the rich, meaty smokiness with the sweetness of the malt.”

Tap @ Brouwers... Poured black with a moderate, wispy head. Nose had a mild smoke tones, but mostly roasted grains came through. Smoke was more evident in the flavor. Campfire and tobacco tones with roasted malts, charred grains, cocoa, dark fruits and some sweetness. Mildly bitter but not astringent.

Pours thick and black with a thick dirty brown head. The nose is ashtray, chocolate, bacon, coffee. The taste is high sweet, medium high bitter and smoke! The texture is smooth and creamy, body is heavy and finish is long. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

750 ml bottle shared at the Beer Download table at DLD- thanks, everyone! Pours a deep brown color, mostly opaque, with a tan ring for a head. Mellow smoke throughout, with dark chocolate, roasted malts, dark fruits (plums, raisins), and earth. Medium-full bodied, with low carbonation and a rich, smoky mouthfeel. Nicely done smoked imperial stout.

This collaboration pours a jet black with a thin head. I was expecting a bit more smoke from this one but I do get a certain wood note underneath the Bruery Imperial Stout. Some dark coffee notes in there as well.

Tap at the tasting room. Pours a deep black with mild tan head. Aroma is roasted to burnt coffee beans, toffee and some other various sweetness. Taste is like a burnt marshmallow with some stale coffee beans. The sweetness comes in to finish it off otherwise. Too much smoke.

Tap. Pours opaque black, small tan head, creamy, great lacing. Aroma is roasty, coffee, cigarettes, touch of smoke. Flavor is the same, little sweetness, medium bitter, wood, light astringence, smoke. Medium body, ABV quite well masked.

A medium coffee aroma, with a fair amount of smok that lasts. This is quite smokey, which is its best characteristic. Easily the thickest beer available at Bruey, even including the special ones. And thankfully the coffee isn’t too much.

Bottle at home with friends. Pour is deep brown, almost black with a frothy brown head and good lacing. Smoky, light raisins, toffee, chocolate, red wine, oaky, campfire, and coffee in the aroma. Taste is roasty, bready, big dark chocolate covered plums, somewhat ashy, firewood, and light spruce notes. Think mouthfeel with soft carbonation. The smoke isn’t overwhelming and its really well-balanced. Nice stout.
