2009 edition Super inky black color (as expected). Thick & with viscous lacing left around the glass. Thin layer of tan head. Aroma is almost pure bourbon - it comes through so strongly that you really canít pick up much of anything else (possibly some hints of vanilla). Flavor is a bit better with the maltiness fighting its way through the bourbon a bit more than in the nose. The sweetness makes itself known as well. Not bad by any means - I just prefer a bit more complexity. Mouthfeel is great - the thick feel of this one really works well for this beer. The finish is (not surprisingly) very strong and boozy - canít imagine Iíd be able to put way too much of this stuff - its a big bold bourbon bomb of a beer so if you like that sort of thing you will LOVE this. Recommended, but maybe a bit underwhelming - just not as complex as Iíd hoped for - maybe with more time the bourbon would chill out a bit and mingle in with the other flavors but for me that overly bourbony aspect detracted from my overall enjoyment of the beer.

750 ml bottle shared with the Quebec City crew. Pours pitch black with no head. Aroma is chocolate, booze, figs, dates, coffee, tobacco, coconut. Flavor is port wine, figs, tobacco, dates. Finish is boozey, port wine, liquorey. Lingering wood and spirits. Full body, virtually no carbonation. A solid malt bomb.

Bottled @ Zeebra#2. 10cl sample. The aroma roast, tar, chocolate, and a lot of alcohol. Black coloured beer with a thin dark brown head. The taste is sweet, has roast, tar, caramel/molasses, chocolate/coffee tones all overruled by massive alcohol. Pretty full bodied beer. But well, doesnít live up to expectations.

From a 75 cl bottle shared at the Beer Heads bottle share in Falls Church. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma of dark fruits. Flavors of plum, candi sugar and licorice. Boozy sweet finish.

Bottle sample at, of all places, the Great Arkansas beer festival. Pretty much black. Aroma of roofing tar, huge bourbon. Taste is rough burnt licorice, espresso, more bourbon. Definitely a big beer.

2012 bottle opened in 2014. Pours murkey black/caramel with no head. Powerfully strong alcohol presence right off the bat. Some more subtle barrel notes. I get the dark fruit and cocoa mix too. Taste is combination of all of those elements with a more robust, syrupy chocolate presence. Definitely can taste the oxidation/sherry notes. Warm and complex. As good as I had hoped for.

Bottle in a trade, shared by a friend. Poured a dark Brown colour with no head. Wow... This is intense. Sweet chocolate, cacao, vanilla, oak, Bourbon, toffee, caramel, syrup, very intense Bourbon flavour. Which gives you a long and strong alcohol heat. But Great stuff! A real sipper

2011 Bottle courtesy of friends in low places. Well, itís a sweet, sticky beer that wants to be a sweet sticky beer. Loads of chocolate, caramel, vanilla, oak, and booze fill the palate. Slight sherry oxidation notes. Sweetness itís overwhelming as it is on the nose, but itís still hot going down. If I had to drink a 18% beer, I would probably choose something like this.

Bottle shared by Chuck - thanks! Pours deep mahogany, bordering on opaque. Small brown head that dissipates fairly quickly leaving some lacing. Aroma is heavy cocoa, bourbon, vanilla. Flavor is full sweet and light bitter, heavy chocolate bourbon vanilla with some toffee notes. Medium body, very hot, which is not surprising given the ABV. This is a nice sipper.

Murky brown, not much head. Nose of cherry dipped in brown sugar, flavour has some blueberry! Slightly tart finish with bourbon.
