3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Thick brown with a creamy off white head. Spicy with notes of bread and yeast. Lager yeast exaggerates the malts and leaves the beer a little of balance.

Sampled October 2012
A steady pour into my Bruery tulip produces a two-finger thick, light brown colored head. The beer is a concentrated brown color that approaches black, when held up to the light the beer is dark enough to be opaque. The aroma smells of vanilla, chalky cocoa, and some chewy, spicy whole grain character. The spicy, toasted grain character gets a bit more pronounced over time, and there also seems to be an interesting, but unidentifiable fruit character here in the nose.
The beer is not as sweet as I was expecting, but still has a soft sweetness to it that accentuates the dusty cocoa character, and a touch of vanilla (that at times can actually be quite pronounced), and a touch of chewy malt character. The finish has a burnt, bitter roast character to it that is kept at a noticeable, but fairly contained level; it provides a touch of burnt acidity to it, as well as a solid roasted, dry grain character that is tempered by the vanilla character. The vanilla in the finish couples with viscous, lingering heft; in fact it even seems to cause it. Also in the finish is a spicy, whole grain rye character that adds another layer to the complex finish.
Interesting beer, it actually captures the profile of a grain-spicy Black Lager pretty well, the vanilla on top, and the soft, though not distinctly noticeable chocolate character adds an extra complexity, though I almost might say I would prefer the beer without the extra vanilla and chocolate. Still this is a tasty brew that is enjoyable.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle shared on New Years Eve... Poured dark brown, not quite black, with a thin khaki head. Nice mouthfeel, notes of cocoa, dark chocolate, nutty grains, rye spice and clean lager finish with minor acidity showing. Everything seemed to amalgamated nicely here. An unexpected treat on NYE.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
One of the Bruery beers that surprised me this year. Dark brown pour, spare head, decent lacing. Aroma is milk chocolate, light yeast, caramel malt. Taste starts out as some really nice rich chocolate flavors, more on the sweet side of things rather than bitter. Finishes with some nice spicyness that almost feels like booze but is more likely the rye at 7%. Quite nice, if it finished a little more full bodied it would be great!

Bottle. Dark brown pour, small ring of carbonation and an aroma of a little vanilla and light chocolate. Flavor is also nice chocolate, cut by some well balanced vanilla. Really nice surprise, I didn’t expect to like this all that much.

Nose is yeasty and malty goodness. Pour is dark with just a little head. Low carbonation and some really subtle flavors going on here. This is nice but not special. One word description might be ’weak’.
