3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
17th March 2012
Opaque black beer, good cream - tan head. Smooth palate with a little fine carbonation. Good chocolate, cocoa and vanilla. Just a little rye, could do with more I think. A trace of fruity tang, well buried. Smooth finish. Good chocolate beer but more rye would have spiced it up.

Bottle. Black body with a lasting bit of greyish head. Smells of chocolate and pear and light pepper. Flavor is sweet then white grape finishes with a caramel spice that reminnds me of an esb but better

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Loved this fresh. 1.5 years later, the chocolate has faded and the flavors don't pop as boldly. Touch of smoke, more baker's chocolate, rye malt, good but not great.

750mL shared at Congregation Azusa. Pours a clear deep cola with higher carbonation. Wispy lacing. Nose is soy, savory, gin botanicals, smoked salt, then some hefty green olive. Taste is dusty, chalky, watery. Palate is watery, thin. Odd.

bottle thanks to reigning OTL member of the year dasilky1. too sweet for my liking. too much sweet vanilla soaked wet dough. not awful, but not exactly my cup of beer. rye and roast sounds like a neat combo, but the vanilla and cocoa may have pushed this in to goofball territory.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from timfoolery. Not much head. Really smooth, chocolatey, with a subtle rye flavor that builds up. Light but not too thin... almost like a porter. Good beer.

Bottle poured into glass. Big thanks to Randy for sharing this. Didn’t get a whole lot of rye from this one but the chocolate flavor was most certainly there, which makes me happy. Vanilla makes it’s presence felt on the back end with a dry sort of finish. Really tasty!
