4 Calling Birds was our 2011 winter ale - a spiced strong dark ale. We took inspiration from the traditional winter warmer for our fourth verse, integrating gingerbread spices into a robust dark ale. Notes of licorice & banana bread mingle with dark fruit, molasses and bitter chocolate for a perfect cold weather sipper! This is the Bourbon Barrel Aged version of last years holiday seasonal! Spending a year in rich oak barrels, the beer has picked up incredibly deep and luxurious notes from the oak and bourbon, but has maintained it’s original charm.

750-mL bottle. A flat black pour with a tan ring of bubbles for a head. Light bourbon and chocolate are the first tones on the nose, followed by pungent spices (ginger, nutmeg, and a bit of star anise). Toffee, chocolate, and light coffee are detectable first on the taste, along with caramel, light oak, a ton of hot booze (but barely any bourbon flavor), and muted ginger, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Fairly flat with a slick texture and a spicy, long finish. While the flavors have mellowed a bit with age, it is still one of my favorite Christmas ales.

Sampled at ESBLS at my house. Thanks Shep. Dark brown with no head. So much whiskey and fruit in the aroma. That is also tasted with a big whiskey bite. That brings some harshness. Vanilla and tree bark. Spices. This is really hot as alcohol is very much noted. Big dryness, too. A great beer to share.

Bottle. Nutty raisin and toffee aroma. Barrel adds a sweet toffee and maple note to the dark raisiny fruit flavored beer. Some spice but possibly faded some.

Pours deep deep red brown and slightly hazy with a thin ring of foam lingering around the sides. Nose is typical bruery beer aroma with that distinct nutty malty rich breadiness and complex layers of barrel and fruity alcohol. flavor is similar with that rich nuttiness and alcoholic barrel flavors. Pretty good. I hated the regular version.

Bottle, opened Christmas Eve. Ruby brown with no head. Plum, alcohol, spice, brown sugar, oak - makes me think of mulled bourbon - slightly tart, moderate carbonation and body, boozy, sweet.

750ml bottle. Pours dark hazy brown with zero head. Big bourbon and dark fruit aroma. Taste is the same with a big vanilla boozy finish.

Thanks to tectactoe. Really good bourbon flavors. A lot of different flavors here, dark fruits and spices. Another good one from The Bruery.

750mL bottle shared with kegbear. Dark brown almost black pour with minimal head.W onderful aroma of fruit and booze. Taste is delicious but the aftertaste may be one of the best I have ever tasted. Wow just lingering notes of caramel and rum and a hint of malty spice. Delicious

Bottle. Dark, murky brown pour with an initial froth of tan foam that quickly disappears. Moderate bourbon with vanilla in the aroma followed by a dense malt profile with fig, plum, raisin, brown sugar, and light spice that intermingles with the alcohol heat. Taste is semi-harsh bourbon with alcohol vapors and heavily sweet malt and some spices. The beer smells more interesting than it tastes. Coating mouthfeel. Decent.

Bottle - Pours deep mahogany with a thin ring of tan head. Pretty sharp on the nose. Boozy with sweet dark fruit, bourbon, and not much else. Taste is better--not as sharp, hot, with lots of dark bread malt and a touch of chocolate. Slick, with lots of sharp, hot heat. Not my favorite.
