COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
4 Calling Birds was our 2011 winter ale - a spiced strong dark ale. We took inspiration from the traditional winter warmer for our fourth verse, integrating gingerbread spices into a robust dark ale. Notes of licorice & banana bread mingle with dark fruit, molasses and bitter chocolate for a perfect cold weather sipper! This is the Bourbon Barrel Aged version of last years holiday seasonal! Spending a year in rich oak barrels, the beer has picked up incredibly deep and luxurious notes from the oak and bourbon, but has maintained it’s original charm.

Big thanks to douglas88 for hosting and opening this cool brew. It pours with a clear amber body with thin copper hues supporting a tan head of foam. The aroma has loads of smooth sweet bourbon as well as some vanilla and ginger bread sort of mixed with holiday fruit cake. The taste is similar with smooth rich malt sweetened bourbon to go along with spicy fruit cake and various blended vanilla and sweet malt notes. Into the finish it gets boozy. Nice, the smoothness really makes this work for me.

Bottle received as an extra in a trade. Thank you stawn! Pours dark brown with a rather small frothy offwhite head that doesn’t leave much trace while dissipating. Smell is sweet and spicy with sweet bread, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, caramel, toffee, alcohol, charred wood vanilla, hay and soil. Taste is sweet and spicy with sweet dark bread, caramel, toffee, ginger cloves, nutmeg, hay, soil and alcohol. Mouthfeel is round, spicy astringent, boozy and medium to full bodied. finish is sweet and spicy with caramel, toffee, spices, soil and charred wood. Too sweet and spicy for me...

"Very bourbon heavy, probably even when newer, as most of their barreled offerings ain’t exactly shy about it. Love the bourbon and dark spices (gingerbread like under he bourbon) especially on the nose. Has held up nice since coming out. Strong and sweet, but never would have thought it nearly 15% if the bottle didn’t say so."

Pour out of 750 ml bottle, dark reddish brown pour with off white head, aroma brought notes of brown sugar, dark fruit, oak, vanilla, slight maple, very sweet. Taste is a mix of caramel toffee, hints of acidic malt, hints of oak, vanilla, touch of grain, slight bourbon, molasses, brown sugar, finishing fairly sweet. Good, but a bit over the top.

Bottle at home with friends. Pour is murky brown with a small tan head and decent lacing. Big bourbony, toffee, raisins, figgy, brown sugar, dates, wood, and soy notes in the aroma. Taste is vanilla, cardamom, dark chocolate, toffee, coffee, light raisins, soy sauce, raisins, and roasty with a sweet chocolatey finish. Slick mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Pretty good.

Had this at a share, reviewed from notes: Pours a cloudy brown color with tan head. Dark fruits, and lots of it on the nose, along with some bourbon, and oak, tartness and funk too; follows onto the palate. A lot going on with this one, very happy to have tried it. Finishes tart and dry.

Bottle... This beer rocks!… Murky, dark brown pour with a small, fleeting, lightly-tanned head. There are dark fruits and toasted oak goodness galore in the nose, accompanied by a small measure of dried plum. Full-bodied and chewy with modest carbonation. The flavor delivers sweet, roasty, bourbony heat, but it’s not overbearingly alcoholic or sweet. Lengthy, hearty, warming finish. Big-time thanks goes out to biggsbowler for generously sharing his bottle of this tasty treat!

750-mL bottle. A flat black pour with a tan ring of bubbles for a head. Light bourbon and chocolate are the first tones on the nose, followed by pungent spices (ginger, nutmeg, and a bit of star anise). Toffee, chocolate, and light coffee are detectable first on the taste, along with caramel, light oak, a ton of hot booze (but barely any bourbon flavor), and muted ginger, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Fairly flat with a slick texture and a spicy, long finish. While the flavors have mellowed a bit with age, it is still one of my favorite Christmas ales.
