COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
4 Calling Birds was our 2011 winter ale - a spiced strong dark ale. We took inspiration from the traditional winter warmer for our fourth verse, integrating gingerbread spices into a robust dark ale. Notes of licorice & banana bread mingle with dark fruit, molasses and bitter chocolate for a perfect cold weather sipper! This is the Bourbon Barrel Aged version of last years holiday seasonal! Spending a year in rich oak barrels, the beer has picked up incredibly deep and luxurious notes from the oak and bourbon, but has maintained it’s original charm.

Bottle. Aroma of spice, ginger, clove and banana. I got a strong banana flavor at first. Lots of ginger bread spice, caramel and vanilla. A nice holiday beer.

Pours super dark brown with just a wisp of tan head. Aroma is wood, bourbon, vanilla, caramel, and cocoa. Taste is much the same as the nose with a pronounced chocolate note. This is a fantastic beer.

Had back to back with original. This one has the same dark brown pour but faster dissipating head. Aromas of vanilla, whiskey, ginger bread and a lil hint of the cocoa. Taste is vanilla gingerbread with chocolate and whiskey finishing into a long vanilla tannin dance. The whiskey noted and BA ing really hide the tartness of the cocoa in the original version. Quite drinkable and not boozy which is crazy for a 15%

Phenomenal beer. Very boozy but has exceptional depth. Flavor lingers and can be enjoyed anytime, but especially in Winter. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

750ml bottle, shared by b3shine. Hazy dark brown color. Minimal off-white head, virtually none. Nice vanilla nose, light spice. A lot more spice in the flavor, some cinnamon, some light dark fruit. Bigger body. More dry. Lighter carbonation. Alcohol is impressively well-hidden. Sweeter taste. Very light bitter. Some wood. So smooth and drinkable for 15%.. You’d expect some alcohol warmth, but there is very little. Good vanilla. Not too much Belgian spice, but a reasonable amount for the style. I dig this.

I’d give this a 12 in aroma if possible. Tons of bourbon whiskey. and molasses. This has a good bourbon flavor. It’s like a lighter-in-body version of a Goose Island Bourbon County Stout, which makes it even better. Fantastic!

750 ml bottle shared by b3shine- thanks again, Beau! Pours a semi-cloudy brown-amber color with some bubbles on top. Aroma of bourbon, winter spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger), brown sugar, vanilla, caramel, and molasses. The flavor hits all the same notes. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a mouthfeel that starts smooth and finishes spicy, warming throughout.

750 ml bottle to snifter (shared with the group). Looks decent; a cloudy brown with razor-thin off-white lacing and no real carbonation. Smells good; sweet and boozy. Tastes like it smells with some gingerbread presence. Nice on the palate. Tasty stuff!

A - Dark brown-black with a thin finger of frothy khaki-chocolate colored head. Fades fairly quickly. S - Dark caramel and chocolate malts, oak, vanilla, Bourbon, ginger, cinnamon, molasses, nutmeg, black licorice, Belgian yeast, dark fruits, and booze. T - Dark caramel and chocolate malts, Bourbon, oak, vanilla, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, black licorice, molasses, dark fruits, Belgian yeast, clove, pepper, banana, and booze. M - Full bodied with moderate-low carbonation. Smooth with a warming, sweet, and spicy finish. D - Big bourbon flavor, but the beer still feels somewhat balanced.
