4 Calling Birds was our 2011 winter ale - a spiced strong dark ale. We took inspiration from the traditional winter warmer for our fourth verse, integrating gingerbread spices into a robust dark ale. Notes of licorice & banana bread mingle with dark fruit, molasses and bitter chocolate for a perfect cold weather sipper! This is the Bourbon Barrel Aged version of last years holiday seasonal! Spending a year in rich oak barrels, the beer has picked up incredibly deep and luxurious notes from the oak and bourbon, but has maintained itís original charm.

Bomber shared by my good friend Randy, thanks brotha! This one is still boozy has hell! Hints of cocoa, chocolate malts and coconut. Would let this sit for a little while longer.

"Very bourbon heavy, probably even when newer, as most of their barreled offerings ainít exactly shy about it. Love the bourbon and dark spices (gingerbread like under he bourbon) especially on the nose. Has held up nice since coming out. Strong and sweet, but never would have thought it nearly 15% if the bottle didnít say so."

Pour out of 750 ml bottle, dark reddish brown pour with off white head, aroma brought notes of brown sugar, dark fruit, oak, vanilla, slight maple, very sweet. Taste is a mix of caramel toffee, hints of acidic malt, hints of oak, vanilla, touch of grain, slight bourbon, molasses, brown sugar, finishing fairly sweet. Good, but a bit over the top.

Bottle at home with friends. Pour is murky brown with a small tan head and decent lacing. Big bourbony, toffee, raisins, figgy, brown sugar, dates, wood, and soy notes in the aroma. Taste is vanilla, cardamom, dark chocolate, toffee, coffee, light raisins, soy sauce, raisins, and roasty with a sweet chocolatey finish. Slick mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Pretty good.

Bottle @ Stephenís house. Pours a reddish brown, clear appearance with little head. Ginger, caramel. molasses, vanilla, whiskey, plum aroma. Lots of coconut and vanilla in the mouth. Caramel and toffee. Pretty boozy. Whiskey. Chocolate. Some anise and light fruits. Pretty boozy. Ok.

Had this at a share, reviewed from notes: Pours a cloudy brown color with tan head. Dark fruits, and lots of it on the nose, along with some bourbon, and oak, tartness and funk too; follows onto the palate. A lot going on with this one, very happy to have tried it. Finishes tart and dry.

Bottle... This beer rocks!Ö Murky, dark brown pour with a small, fleeting, lightly-tanned head. There are dark fruits and toasted oak goodness galore in the nose, accompanied by a small measure of dried plum. Full-bodied and chewy with modest carbonation. The flavor delivers sweet, roasty, bourbony heat, but itís not overbearingly alcoholic or sweet. Lengthy, hearty, warming finish. Big-time thanks goes out to biggsbowler for generously sharing his bottle of this tasty treat!

750-mL bottle. A flat black pour with a tan ring of bubbles for a head. Light bourbon and chocolate are the first tones on the nose, followed by pungent spices (ginger, nutmeg, and a bit of star anise). Toffee, chocolate, and light coffee are detectable first on the taste, along with caramel, light oak, a ton of hot booze (but barely any bourbon flavor), and muted ginger, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Fairly flat with a slick texture and a spicy, long finish. While the flavors have mellowed a bit with age, it is still one of my favorite Christmas ales.

Sampled at ESBLS at my house. Thanks Shep. Dark brown with no head. So much whiskey and fruit in the aroma. That is also tasted with a big whiskey bite. That brings some harshness. Vanilla and tree bark. Spices. This is really hot as alcohol is very much noted. Big dryness, too. A great beer to share.

Bottle. Nutty raisin and toffee aroma. Barrel adds a sweet toffee and maple note to the dark raisiny fruit flavored beer. Some spice but possibly faded some.

Pours deep deep red brown and slightly hazy with a thin ring of foam lingering around the sides. Nose is typical bruery beer aroma with that distinct nutty malty rich breadiness and complex layers of barrel and fruity alcohol. flavor is similar with that rich nuttiness and alcoholic barrel flavors. Pretty good. I hated the regular version.
