4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Highly acclaimed variation on The Bruery’s Black Tuesday theme, at Bruery Sucré Tasting in Bruges. Thin, pale greyish beige, quickly dissipating head over a hazy black beer with warm yellowish mahogany brown edges, like Black Tuesday. Complex, intense aroma of bitter chocolate, sherry, fig, shoe polish-like phenols, molasses, Worcestershire sauce, cocoa, beef broth, coffee grounds, whisky, candied cherries, dry thyme and indeed vanilla, but less strong than I had expected. Candied sweetness in the mouth, raisin, candied cherry, hint marmelade, soft carbo (almost flat), thick and oily mouthfeel, thick nutty, caramelly and eventually very dark chocolatey maltiness with a soft roasted bitterness to it, coffeeish, with overwhelming liqueurish alcohol growing to great intensity in the end, as is the case with ’standard’ Black Tuesday; vanilla and peppery hops are there too, but the booze overpowers most other flavours in the very end. A bit over the top for me, like most of these super strong Bruery exclusivities, but seductively rich, too seductive not to enjoy it - this type of beers force you to very slow sipping in small quantities, and in that sense, they certainly deliver what they promise. The moment you cross this border in terms of quantity or velocity, they become very tiring in my opinion, but considering their daring intensity and substantial complexity, I will not take that into account in my rating.

This group of bottles during the Bottle Share was amazing and outstanding. Flavors and aromas of chocolate and dark fruits. So freaking good.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Boozy sweetness for the most part. A ton of vanilla, chocolate, toffee, cherries, all dipped in warm bourbon. Alcohol is hidden very well (under all that sugar). Its thick and syrupy. Low carb. Its good but too much sugar for me. Its a once a year beer to keep you warm and mess you up.

2013 bottle shared with wife. Pours the part with a thin tan head. Lots of boirbon, oak, vanilla, cocoa, full body, dry finish.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours a dark brown, almost black color, with a fizzy, hazelnut brown lacing, immediately collapsing to a tiny film at the edge of the glass.
Has a profound milk chocolate aroma, blending into coconut shell and flowery, warming vanilla. Its vanilla quality grows more profound, once detected, complimenting earthy oak and fudge, with a fizzy coca-cola sweetness.
Features almost no carbonation, exhibiting a smooth, big body, due to a hot, profound oakiness, balanced by burned earth and a flowery quality.
Begins with toffee supported vanilla bean among scorched earth and bitter chocolate chips. The Bourbon barrel adds a warming glow to the tongue, which amazingly enough never turns hot or boozy, as well as spiced, dry wood bark. Mocha sweetness, together with rock sugar and a pleasant chocolate bitterness create a thrilling interplay, wrapped up by the omnipotent barrel, including a huge amount of vanilla. Finishes with a mix of earthen malts and a spicy dryness, creating a palate challenging finish, which lasts on the tongue for minutes. After that dryness, a late caramel coated milk chocolate quality evolves, creating a mellowing, silk last impression.
While its nose features a focussed, minimalistic approach, the beers full potential unfolds on the palate, in all its heavy-bodied facetts. It is certainly well executed, but for my personal taste, this is just a tad too over the top. Its richness overburdens my palate, it needs to chill down for a couple of minutes after each sip, which is basically not how a beer works for me. This is closer to being a liquour for me, on which I can sip from time to time. We split the bottle through three people and had problems to finish it.

Large shared 2013 bottle that went quickly!
Sweet aroma with some alcohol esters precedes an even boozier and markedly sweet flavor. Near cloying sweet level.
Little chocolate before the aftertaste, and then it’s more milk than dark chocolate.
O: didn’t quite live up to its reputation.
