Bottle… This beer rocks!… Mostly clear, very dark ale - shows a crimson hue when held up to the sun - with a small, bubbly, khaki head. The aroma is very vinous and presents a boatload of red wine, ethanol, burnt caramel and wood characteristics; lesser notes of bourbon and chocolate with just a trace of acetaldehyde. Full-bodied and silken with minimal carbonation. The flavor is a mingling of singed caramel, espresso, burnt marshmallow, toffee, dark fruit and praline sweetness with just a splash of port. So much alcohol – it caresses my throat and belly with mellow warmth in both the sweet, decadent flavor and the rich, luxurious finish. World class beer that should only get better with time!

Bottle thanks to Bman1113VR. Pours a nice looking orangish dark brown with tan head. Aroma is strong, malty, dark fruit, spicy, must and oak. Flavor is the same as the aroma with some fruity esters and a little licorice. Mouth feel is heavy body with low carbonation. Overall, a very tasty sipper!

Bottle. Pours near black with a very thin tan head. Loads of dark fruit sweetness in the aroma, with some bourbon and toffee as well. Relatively low carbonation, which I felt was appropriate given the flavor profile. The flavor has a complex fruity sweetness with plum, raisin, and blackberry. Bourbon sweetness really shows up in the finish. I can see how some would find this overly sweet, but I thought it was outstanding.

UPDATED: SEP 12, 2009 Bottle courtesy of Bman1113VR. Clouded red brown pour. Little head can be found even when agitated. Scent is all wood and old fruit. Seriously huge barrel smell. Bitterness on the edges with rough aged tastes. Very woody with hints of bourbon. This is pretty intense.

750ml waxed sealed bottle #2791/4777 by way of the always generous BOLTZ7555 – huge thanks Jason! Pours murky swamp water brown with almost zero head, sans for a some larger bubble ringing the glass. The nose is sweet dark fruits, tobacco, light wet cardboard and black licorice. The taste is molasses, brown sugar, raisins, prunes and oaky vanilla with a hot boozy finish. This stuff is definitely warming. Medium creamy mouthfeel despite not being very carbonated. Good stuff that will get better with age. Thanks again J!

Poured like a cola with far less active carbonation, and very little residual carbonation. Tiny head. Nose was big on booze, maple srup, molasses, biscuit and slightly roasted nuts. Taste is rough at first. Hints at being too boozy, but as it warms the other flavors open up and compete with the booze, lots of spice, nutty, roasty, hint of chocolate, biscuit, layers upon layers of flavor. This should probably sit in the bottle for a year to mature.

mreusch (851) - Olathe, Kansas, USA - SEP 2, 2009
750ml bottle. Pours a hazy golden burgundy with a small loose head of larger bubbles. Aroma is sweeter, with candied fruits, caramel, ripe dark fruits, brown sugar, and light vanilla and oak. Flavor is more sweetness, and not in a good way. Too much everywhere, sweet, sweet, sweet, to a fault. I could drink this if I had to, but why would I? Bummer, this is pretty much a drain pour for me, and can’t imagine age will help it out. Anyone want to trade for my other bottle?

yobdoog (1888) - Kingston, New York, USA - SEP 2, 2009
Brownish color with a small head. Aroma is very strong. Lots of bourbon, very boozy. Flavor is all booze, some vanilla and wood. Very strong and needs some age. Sweet caramel and molasses wants to come through but is overpowered by the bourbon.
