COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Two of the most out-of-the-box breweries around, The Bruery and Dogfish Head recently combined forces on a brew; the result is as intriguing as one might expect. Inspired by the strength of the Japanese people to remain sturdy during the recent earthquake that hit their small island nation, the beer’s depth of flavor comes from flavors steeped in tradition. The ale is brewed with a spin on the traditional shichimi togarashi, or Japanese seven spice blend. Ginger, cayenne, white sesame seeds, black sesame seeds, poppy seeds, and nori were added to a base blonde ale that was created using two kinds of rice. Replacing the typical orange peel included in shichimi, whole kumquats were pulverized and added to the whirlpool, giving the spiced beer a kick of fresh citrus. A blend of sake yeast and The Bruery’s house yeast was used to ferment this beer into a dry and complex ale, different than anything you’ve likely had before. One dollar from every bottle sold will be going to help the brewers and beer drinkers of Japan in need of our support to fight back from disaster.
First in the Collaboration Series for the Bruery.

(bottle) A big white head that quickly settles into shallow, semi-stiff peaks; a cloudy yellow body with a steady stream of bubbles. Aroma of fruit, vegetable, lots of spice, sweet, grass, lemon (not quite sure what a kumquat smells or tastes like, but I think that might be what I’m smelling/tasting). Medium body. Flavor is spicy, sweet, citrus, moderately earthy; nice acidity to it. especially on the finish. Sweet but refreshing. Moderate hops.

Bottle thanks to Miver. Aroma of orange, yeast and pepper. Cloudy golden body with medium lasting head. Flavor begins with strong with citrus and ginger followed by cayenne and yeast. Subtle wheat, rice finish. Dry, peppery aftertaste. An excellent beer.

THOUGHTS: My initial thoughts were that it reminded me of Duvel without all the hops. But eventually more of the spiciness came out. A little cayenne burn in the throat. Hid alcohol fairly well. Orangey citrus was constant from the start to finish. Must have been the kumquats. Very nice but not nearly as complex or special as the laundry list of ingredients would suggest. The heat was only in the throat at first but then moved to the tongue toward the end of the bottle. Seemed a little like wheat beer. Must have been the rice. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a sparkling, clear, golden with beautiful carbonation that kept rebuilding the average to large, fluffy, ever so slightly, off-white head that remained a thick sheet and left good to excellent lacing. The aroma had heavy spicy, dusty and fruity yeast; ever so slight fruity sake; honey; slight pepper; and some citrus that must have been the kumquats. When the beer warmed up more there was also a slight funky yeast present. The initial flavor was mod to heavily acidic, slightly sweet and slightly sour; while the finish was moderately sweet, mod to heavily acidic and spicy. There was tons of citrus, orangey kumquats, cayenne, pepper, tons of yeast, ginger, slight toastiness, spicy and dusty yeast, and hints of a sort of a fruity sake sort of thing at the very end. The medium body was slightly syrupy and sticky on the lips and then very dry with very fizzy carbonation and a dry, spicy, slightly alcoholic and ever so slightly metallic finish.

750mL pours straw yellow with fizzy white head. aroma is a little spice and rice wine. mouthful is light and a bit of fruit and spice. the ginger is there... citrus from the kumquat perhaps? very interesting and complex beer. oddly enjoyable, but not delectable...

found this 1/2 off what they originally priced it at in ATL. pours a hazy light gold with a very small white head. nose is fruity and similar to watered down apricots or peaches. flavor is, again, very much like watered down peach syrup. carbonation is annoyingly high. light body but lightly syrupy. quite dry in the finish. i notice some ginger and white pepper of something in flavor. a bit of that sweet, vanilla-like rice too. mild touch of peppermint candy. neat, but a one time beer for me.

750 bottle. Pours hazy deep gold with big fluffy 4-finger white head and a lively carbonation. Nose is champagne yeasty, with rock sugary malt, dry citrus, and hops. Tastes very fruity and floral, with white grape, pear, and floral notes. Complex palate with a zesty crisp finish and gets drier as it warms. This one was very good.

Bottle shared by Brian. Wasn’t sure what to make of this one. The aroma was very pleasant with hints of ginger and spice. Flavor was sort of "tea-ish" but still held that beer flavor quality. Enjoyable and worth a try for sure.

Hazy blonde. Not much head. Spicy aroma with Belgian/witbier yeast overtones. Dry and spicy with subtle kumquat notes. Decent brew.
