Two of the most out-of-the-box breweries around, The Bruery and Dogfish Head recently combined forces on a brew; the result is as intriguing as one might expect. Inspired by the strength of the Japanese people to remain sturdy during the recent earthquake that hit their small island nation, the beer’s depth of flavor comes from flavors steeped in tradition. The ale is brewed with a spin on the traditional shichimi togarashi, or Japanese seven spice blend. Ginger, cayenne, white sesame seeds, black sesame seeds, poppy seeds, and nori were added to a base blonde ale that was created using two kinds of rice. Replacing the typical orange peel included in shichimi, whole kumquats were pulverized and added to the whirlpool, giving the spiced beer a kick of fresh citrus. A blend of sake yeast and The Bruery’s house yeast was used to ferment this beer into a dry and complex ale, different than anything you’ve likely had before. One dollar from every bottle sold will be going to help the brewers and beer drinkers of Japan in need of our support to fight back from disaster.
First in the Collaboration Series for the Bruery.

Bottle split at the Manny G tasting, from an IP trade, 28/06/14. Hazed light golden orange with a good sized off white covering that dissipates to spotting in time. Nose is bitter orange, spice, apricot, tangy citrics, caramel. Taste comprises orange pith, apricot, candyfloss, light herbals, yeast esters, pinch of spice, green berry fruit notes. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Refreshing drop - decent for style.

Pours a lightly hazed golden color with a white head. Smells really interesting, heavy on the citrus and spice notes. Not really what I was expecting. I don’t get a lot of sesame or sake characteristics. The flavor has a lot of yeast, citrus peel, and spice. There’s a bit of banana to it as well as plenty of bread. Wasn’t bad, actually.

Hazy blonde. Not much head. Spicy aroma with Belgian/witbier yeast overtones. Dry and spicy with subtle kumquat notes. Decent brew.

Bottle at Sour & Bitter 2012. Clear yellow - white head. Fruity, flowery, toasted, light honey, funky notes, wheaty, coriander, tartness, spicy, too spicy, sharpness, light body and finish.

Bottle. Pours cloudy gold. White head. Nose/taste of odd musky fruits, ginger, sesame seeds, orange peel, coriander, mild spices and sake yeast. Slightly dry finish. The sake yeast brings a little bite to the back of the palate. Interesting experiment.

750mL bottle, split many ways, pours a hazy pale golden with a small white head. Aroma and flavour of spices (not sure what assortment), wheat, yam and hay. Alcohol is well-worked in, with a medium-to-high carbonation. Spicy finish. Not so good.

Capped 750 from Beer Revolution. Pours hazy gold with a foamy white head. Aroma of citrus zest and spice. Rather full bodied due to the heavy foamy carb. Flavor reminds of a heavy sparkling wine - dry and spicy. Much spicier than a wine but the same sort of thing. Except, perhaps for the citrus. Finishes dry, sparkly and spicily flavorful. Amazing ale.

Tmoney99 (13466) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - JUN 23, 2012
Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured clear dark amber color with an average frothy white head that lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy rice, yeast and spice aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and lively carbonation. Medium to heavy complex sweet flavor with a medium to heavy sweet finish of moderate to long duration. Complex standout brew.
