Jet black appearance. The wax from the bottle smells amazing..tempted to chew it like the wax candy from the 70s. Big bold imperial stout flavor with a nice bourbon coating on my tongue, with the hazelnuts on the back end. A bit hot (hey dummy, its 18.5%), but hidden well for the percentage.

Sampled at Great American Beer Festival 9/24/15. Tasted directly after Black Tuesday. Very similar. Black appearance with a light brown head. Strong, sweet and lightly boozy. Notes of chocolate, dark malts, oak, vanilla, toasted grain, roast, caramel, toffee, bourbon and hazelnuts. Full body. Nice.

Draft at Snallygaster 2015. Poured a medium dark, close to black but not quite, color with a tan head. Velvet. Chocolate syrup. Boozy vanilla, nutty notes. Very smooth. Alcohol is most certainly there, boozy, but not terribly boozy like some high ABV beers I’ve had, these beers seem to be hit or miss, and thankfully this was a big enough hit to recommend. This was a boozy, vanilla, sweet nutty notes. Now I have diabetes. Could they pull this off with half the alcohol? I’d love to try that one...

2015 Release in 750ml bottle. Pours a dark brown color with a bit of head that quickly dissipates. Aroma of hazelnuts from the bottle as it opens. Chocolate flavor with mild hazelnut. A little hot still.

Bottle. Pours a pure black color with a small white head. Very nice viscous body. The aroma is just nuts when you smell the wax. I mean, damn that wax was made of some sort of essence of hazelnuts and it skews it because the beer doesn’t smell like that at all. I mean, it is similar but nowhere near as robust. The beer has hazelnuts but none of the perfumy cake. The flavor is sharp, hot, hazelnuts, roast, sugary sweet almost rum base. Complex. Too much- yes.

Check another beer from The Bruery off the bucket list. Dark brown pour with a tan head. The aroma is full of oak, bourbon, chocolate and hazelnuts. The flavor is similar with a heavy chocolate-covered hazelnut component dominating. You also get some brown sugar and oak as well as the booziness you expect from The Bruery’s big beers. Thick mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Glad I got to try this one.
