1.2 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 4/20 dukeredhair (234) - California, USA - JAN 5, 2013Yikes. pours clear yellow no head no lacing. Aroma of strawberries and armpit. A lot of armpit. Taste is sour with no hints of the red wine barrels or the strawberry. Palate is average I would’ve liked it livelier. This is not to my liking.
3.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 DavoleBomb (1444) - Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 25, 2013
Poured into a tulip.
3.0 A: Deeply hazed, near murky plum color. Fizzy off-white head falls as quickly as it forms.
4.5 S: Nice aroma on this. Lots of strawberry and a pleasant tartness. Red grape adds another layer of complexity underneath. Funk nicely balances the tartness and sourness. Musty funk with dry rotten sweatsocks and pollen-filled air from a wildflower field. Good mixture of aromas with strawberry leading the pack.
3.5 T: The taste does not encompass the power of the strawberries found in the nose, but that’s usually the case with fruit sours. The more important issue is that there isn’t a whole lot of flavor overall. Acetic and tart, but on the tamer side of what the Bruery usually puts out. Strawberry and grape fruitiness is found here. Mild musty funk featuring the flavors found in the nose. It’s tasty, but I keep wanting more complexity and more power from what is there. The malts are doughy and probably more doughy than any other sour I’ve ever had. Hints of tannic astringency.
3.0 M: Medium to heavier medium body. Carbonation is fine, but on the lower end of normal. Lacking spritziness and a bit chewy as opposed to creamy.
3.5 D: Great nose and worth a try, but it’s not very impressive overall.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 phaleslu (4459) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - MAY 25, 2013
750 ml bottle. Pours a cloudy cocoa brown color - very murky if you get some of the bottom of the bottle - with a smaller beige head. Aroma of dry, dusty oak, tart strawberries, lemon, red wine, leather, and sour candy. Flavor of tart strawberries, wine, oaky funk, lemon, floral notes, musty basement, yogurt, and a faint vegetal note. Medium-bodied, with a sour mouthfeel and modest carbonation. Solid sour; it seems like the strawberry is starting to fade already and sour yeast is leading the way. I would have been interested to try it fresher.

Medium in body and interestingly strawberry and sour at the same time.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 FlacoAlto (3451) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - MAY 14, 2013
A steady pour into my Teku glass produces a ½-finger thick, pale tan colored head. The beer has a pretty, rich red color that shows a brilliantly clear, red-tinged, amber-copper hue when held up to the light. The nose definitely smells of strawberries, this was apparent as soon as I started to pour. A more focused inspection yields notes of tart, ripe, sweet strawberries, strawberry seeds, and even concentrated notes that remind me quite strongly of strawberry jam. There seems to be a touch of some acetic acid here, or some other spicy acidity, and there is also a firm, supporting oak character here that provides a soft woodiness, touches of oak acidity, and perhaps some strawberry accentuation vanillin notes. As you really dig into the nose there are faint notes of hay like grain, and then a rubbery, plastic phenolic character towards the finish.
Bracingly tart, sour even, up front, and the finish has a plastic / phenolic note to it that then is taken over by a dry, strawberry flavor. The beer is quite dry, and as such, the flavor does not have the strawberry intensity that the nose does; still though, the strawberry notes are just about the dominant flavor here. Woody flavors lead into the rubbery phenolics, but the oak also provides some light spiciness, as well as a light tannic astringency and body boosting texture. The sourness seems mostly lactic here, and the suggestion of acetic in the nose is not here in the flavor, which reminds me that acetic acid can sometimes smell of strawberries, and that is likely why I thought I had detected it here. This has a nice, effervescent, though light, carbonation to it, which plays well with the light body that is kept from being thin by a lactic slickness and some oak structure.
This has a very nice strawberry character to it, quite vibrant even, but it could use a bit more complexity and / or balance. An interesting beer, it definitely needs to have the plastic / rubber phenolics cleaned up, but honestly this isn’t overly strong, though it is a distraction.
