COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ichigo Highway is a collaborative beer that we created with Hangar 24 Brewing from Redlands, CA. The base style is a sessionable sour red ale that we aged in oak barrels along with a whopping amount of strawberries, most of which were picked from the fields besides Hangar 24’s brewery. Aged for approximately 8 months, this beer has developed a pleasant funk and a delightful acidity that is balanced by the intensely sweet aroma and flavor of the strawberries as well as a unique dryness achieved by using a sake yeast along with our house strain along with souring bacteria. Available in November. 5.5% ABV, Best enjoyed fresh due to the fleeting aroma and flavor of the strawberries

Aroma starts with a fairly strong chemical/plastic/bandaid phenolic note. Once you can get pay the phenolics though there is a really nice strawberry jam character. There is also some acidity in the aroma but it is masked by the phenolics and fruit. Pours a cloudy amber-copper with a slightly off white head that recedes to the edges fairly quickly. No lacing and only small legs. Flavor is better than the aroma as the phenolic note isn't as strong and the strawberry jam is stronger. Starts with some sweetness but that is quickly overrun by acidity - both acetic and lactic. Finishes dry and mouth puckering with lingering acidity and a bit of fruitiness. Mouthfeel is medium light bodied with high carbonation. No perceptible astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall this beer would be amazing if it weren't for the strong phenolic character. I have had this on tap and in the bottle and the phenolics in the bottle seem to be a bit lighter. This review was for the bottled version. I feel like waiting this beer out to see if the phenolics drop but am concerned the fruit will disappear more quickly. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

March 22, 2014 - on tap at Bruery tasting room. Reddish orange pour with limited head. Aroma was malt, spice / cinnamon and strawberry. Taste was sour fruit and some wood. Interesting that the sour did not seem to come out in the aroma.

Pour out of 750 mL bottle, very muddy dark red pour with thin to no head, aroma brought notes of big strawberry, white wine, oak, hints of lemon, vanilla, slight earth. Taste is a mix of big strawberry, fleshy red fruit into some vanilla, oak, lemon, tart berry, finishing fairly sour, slightly oaky. Pretty nice.

Bottle. Pours reddish brown with fizzy off white head. Nose and taste of strawberry, puckering tartness, caramel malt, earth, wild yeast and wood chips. Medium body. Very tart. Touch of bandaid in finish.

750 ml bottle courtesy of a daknole trade. Thanks, dude. Pours a murky reddish amber glow, darker well hazed body, pinkish red tinge throughout. A frothy carbonation driven offwhite head dies to a mellow ring, subtle lacing and not much stick around. Aromas are quite appealing, throwing rich seedy strawberries, tart and mellow oak and red wine that comes in, distinct firm lactic acidity of lemons, lemonade, yogurt, and more seedy strawberry. Gentle bready malts, some straw, gentle funkiness. Touches of vanilla, more oak, some tannic red wine and red grapes, and straw. Very alluring. Initial is lighter end of the fold, a touch of girth. Firmer sour strawberries, red wine, and oak. Nice decent tannic feel, big lactic acidity, yogurt and lemons, touches of vanilla. Seedy sour strawberries, some good lemonade. The oak is more apparent up front. Into the middle aa bit more fizzy and refreshing, strawberry lemonade, firm lactic acidity, some gentle brett that falls behind. Fruityzn never really gets offensive, a touch of rubber up front is pretty mellow. Sour and quite drinkable into the backend, with lots of lemonade, citrus, lactic acidity. The richer strawberry feel is there but not as intense as the nose and up front. A bit more dry and tannic, mixing well with the dry and acidic feel, a bit slippery/slick on the palate. Reall nice. I wouldn’t call this complex but it certainly hits the spot quite well. Good fruit presence, decent oak, firm acidity without being offensive or acedic/harsh. Quite nice. Not a pretty pour but drinks pretty well. Nice one here. A touch sweet at times, a touch acidic and brash at others for some people that may not be accustomed. I dig this.. But can completely understand others not doing so.

Bottle... Cloudy, dark, caramel-colored ale with no head. The aroma is wonderfully funky and fruity, presenting tons of strawberry fun. Medium-bodied with busy carbonation. The sour, fruity flavor offers a faint salty component. Finishes crisp, sour, and then dry. Bottle courtesy of biggsbowler!

750 ml bottle shared by b3shine (jan ’13). Pours a cloudy orange amber color with a small white head. The aroma has a bunch of fresh strawberry, strawberry jam, tart juice, lactic sour notes, some funk and a strange plastic/latex character. The flavor has more tart strawberry, lactic sour, acidic, funk with only a hint of the plastic notes from the nose. Interesting, but needs a little cleaning up.

Muddled strawberry brown color. Bright white head that drops to a thick collar. Nose is odd. Big strawberry, raspberry, and wine notes with high acidity, but a whole lot of plastic as well. Hard to get over the plastic notes. Taste is better. Ripe raspberries, strawberries and more like white wine than red. High acid, very tart. Typical Bruery sour. Want to like it a lot but man the nose just kills this in a big way

Pours a pretty entertaining looking reddish brown. Aroma leaves a little something to be desired and is a lot of earth and must and damp sweat. From afar though I just got a touch of the fruit and wild yeast though. Weird. Flavor is insanely tart and it takes some work to get through that. Once you do there is some nice fruit and sweet candy undertones. Glad to try it.
