COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Hottenroth Berliner Weisse is brewed in memory of Fred & Sarah Hottenroth, our founder, Patrick Rue’s grandparents. This tart, German-style Berliner Weisse is as authentic as it gets. We use lactobacillus and a hint of brettanomyces to sour this very unusual, low gravity wheat beer. To cut the tartness for those with sweeter tastes, raspberry or woodruff syrup is a traditional way to sweeten the beer. Almost an extinct style, we hope to help revive the Berliner Weisse in memory of two great people.

Bottle. The pour is a hazy yellow. The aroma is a mix of a sour and wheat. The taste is sour up front. A little too bitter. A very unusual taste, not quite a sour, not quite a wheat. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle dated 2015. Pours a very light hazy yellow color with fizzy white head. Light citrus notes and some tartness on the nose; follows onto the palate. Light bodied. Finishes tart and dry. Very nicely done berliner.

Bottleshare at Mr Smith’s pad. Hazy gold beer, a very short lived white head. Some egg on the nose. Palate is light, dry and has decent fine carbonation. Light tangy citrus, orange and lemon. A bitter and wonky funk underneath. Light semi dry finish. Pretty lame all round.

Bottle shared at Leightons place 14/04/2016. Many thanks to Kenny for this one. Clouded yellow straw coloured pour with a small white head. Aroma is a tart sour, eggs a little sulphur, apple, doughy grains. Flavour is composed of Ightfield grains, little thin, doughy, apple, Watermelon. Palate is composed of light grains, highish carbonation mineral. Not a huge fan.

75cl bottle shared at the mid-April tasting @Leighton’s. Many thanks to Ken for this one. It pours a hazy pale straw color with small white head. Aroma is funky skunky pissy sweet with some lemon and cat piss. Taste is tart acidic with lemon juice Greek yoghurt apricot gooseberries and sherbet. Light bodied with lively carbonation. Overall, weird

Big bottle shared in the LDN - big thanks Kenny ’Summer of ’76’ Mitchell. Pours hazy gold with a fizzy, fast-fading white head. The nose holds zesty lemon, citrus peel, tangy wheat, light funk. Light sweet flavour with lemony tartness, dried wheat, some salty bite, hay. Light bodied with fizzy carbonation. Clean and dry on the finish, with quick tartness, more lemony bite, some rindy bitterness. Pretty decent stuff.

A beer to have when you’re having more than one. Aroma of lemons, spice and grain. Pours a cloudy pale yellow color with a a short lasting white well laced head. Tart lemony taste with slight grain, medium body with a tart lemon finish

Pours slightly hazy hay-coloured golden yellow with a large fizzy white head that loudly and quickly fades like the cap on a soda. AROMA: wheat, bread/biscuity, lemon, hay, banana, earthy funk, cheese, woody, grassy and faint herbs. TASTE: wheat, bread/biscuity, lemon, hay, banana, earthy funk, cheese, white wine vinegar, woody, grassy, slight spice and faint herbs. AFTER TASTE: wheat, bready, lemon and grassy with a crisp dry finish.

Light hazy straw hue with a thin white rocky top. Big cheesy sulphuric fart on the nose, but you can kinda get a little banana and guava fruitiness underneath it. Better taste than the aroma but it’s just a bit bretty wheaty and a touch of acidic lemon rind. Dry and wheaty flavor with lots of funky Brett.

From notes (10/7/15). Good and refreshing after a long and unexpectedly hot day. It’s dry, thin, sour, and effervescent, and it’s a really solid if somewhat one-dimensional Berliner Weisse.

I’m bias...I love this style, fell in love with Berliner Kindl when I was stationed in Germany for 5 years. Pours a golden yellow color with big fizzy head. Aromas of citrus peel, yeast, hay. Flavors are tart sour apple, grass, and some barnyard.
