Hottenroth Berliner Weisse is brewed in memory of Fred & Sarah Hottenroth, our founder, Patrick Rue’s grandparents. This tart, German-style Berliner Weisse is as authentic as it gets. We use lactobacillus and a hint of brettanomyces to sour this very unusual, low gravity wheat beer. To cut the tartness for those with sweeter tastes, raspberry or woodruff syrup is a traditional way to sweeten the beer. Almost an extinct style, we hope to help revive the Berliner Weisse in memory of two great people.

Pours a cloudy yellow, no head. Funk on the nose. Crisp, tart and finishes clean. Nice example of the style.

750ml bottle pours hazy pale yellow with a finger of fizzy head. Nose is hay, lemon, mineral, wet straw, grain, citrus. Taste is crisp, medium acidity, wet grain backdrop with snappy farm lemon and citrus fruit, judt a hint of hayfield funk. Finishes tart with cereal grain, lemon, orange, wheat. Solid berliner.

On tap at The Mayor of Old Town. Pale yellow and light hazy appearance with a white head. Aroma of tart lemons, corn, toasted grains, light herbs and light bread. Similar flavor, mildly tart with a light sweet finish and a light body. A pretty decent Berliner overall, but probably my least favorite Terreux so far (of 11).

Not much to this. Some citrus and some bread yeast. Pours cloudy yellow. Watery clean finish. Weird to drink a bruery beer that isn’t 20%. Tap at Churchkey.

Bottle. Pours light golden, with a big creamy head settling two fingers thick. Aroma is pretty strange fruity lactic acid with lime and musty apricot peel, as well as some notes of yeast and yoghurt. Light body, with soft to average carbonation. Flavour is tart lactic acid with lemon and fruity notes of apricots.

Draft @ Bruery. Aroma of tardy wheat. Fresh taste of sour wheat and mild salt. Mildly fruity. Very refreshing and nice.

A very solid sour beer. Smell of lemons take over this beer. Nice balance with the sour. Very good beer.

UPDATED: OCT 19, 2015 On tap at the Escondido, LA. Great Berliner Weisse. Tart, hint of funk. Very fresh, refreshing. Possibly the best commercial one I’ve had. Served with fresh crushed raspberries. And why not?

Beautiful hazy orange with sparkling yellow golden accents. High soft head that fades away to pleasant mellow carbonation. Smell is lemons, oranges, herbs, sour and spices. Taste is super, super tart. Holy damn, this might be the most tart thing ever. Tart and sour, but balanced and delicious.

November 21st, 2013 - My tasting notes got lost in the digital aether, from phone to Evernote account, but the Hottenroth left a deep impression - enough to remember it byy almost two years later. No photographic evidence exists either, it seems, but the aroma was clear and sweet, with a hint of that seaside town saline edge about it, and a flavor that was bright and acidic and funky, all within the play and bounds of good taste. The sugar is played way, way down to let the wheat and other Berlinerweisse cast play more than supporting roles. The very first Berlinerweisse I had impressed me more as a dessert beer, but this brew could be an appetizer beer, opening the meal with a grand note.
