Commercial Description:
Brewed in memory of my Grandparents (Fred and Sarah Hottenroth), this tart German-style Berliner Weisse is as authentic as it gets. We used lactobacillus and a hint of brettanomyces to sour this very unusual, low gravity wheat beer. To cut the tartness for those with sweeter tastes, raspberry or woodruff syrup is a traditional way to sweeten the beer. Almost an extinct style, we hope to help revive the Berliner Weisse in memory of two great people (ABV 3.1%, IBU 2, SRM 2, Format 30L kegs).

Nice Fruit juice aroma with notes of pineapple and an ever present sourness. Pours a pale straw slightly cloudy yellow. The flavor is slightly sour, but not overwhelming lemon and fruit juice/ raspberry are noticeable.

Thanks to Kaiser81 for sending me this bottle as an extra. This is my first Berlinner Weiss and I was very impressed. Pours yellow straw color with a white head. The aroma is very tart with some citrus. The flavor is sour wheat, lemon, other citrus and some spices. Very drinkable and a light bodied beer. For 3.1 percent, this beer has a ton of flavor.

Pours a light, hazy straw yellow with a smallish, bright white head that recedes to a small, soapy collar. The aroma is very tart with lots of lemon zest with a toasted grain aroma as well. The taste is very similar and starts with a lip-puckering lemon tartness on top of the light grainy backbone. The mouthfeel is light and effervescent with a ton of carbonation, maybe a tad overdone, but that’s par for the course with Bruery’s year-round offerings I’ve had. This one is not extremely complex, but it is unbelievably drinkable.

Thanks andrew for this from the 750ml. Pours a hazed milky yellow with a white head. Lots of earthy hay notes. Really heavy on the funk for a berliner weisse. So much barnyard, that it gets a little old. But the citrus is underneath. Better in flavor as the citrus, wheat, and sweetness balances out all the funk. Citrussy sweet and pretty tasty. Really drinkable, I like these low alc beers. Cheers! I’ll put another point on the overall, cause I can’t up that aroma or appearance.

Citrus and floral aromas. Pure white head, cloudy and very pale appearance. Highly carbonated. Tastes like sour lemon candy, very tart, but not too sweet. Thin body, which suits the flavor. Tastes good at colder than cellar temperature, I imagine this would be an awesome beer in the summer (too bad it’s winter now.) I’ll definitely be looking for this come June.

750 ml bottle. Pours a hazy glowing light orange yellow with a thick pillowy white head. Aroma is very sharp and citric but with a nice underlying barely there sweetness. A nice wheat character keeps everything balanced. Flavor starts with an initial sweet lemon candy character but pinches the cheeks as it rolls to mid tongue. Nicely tart in the back of the mouth along with some sourness in the finish and a cereal grainy character that rides along a funky cheese note. Medium body and a sharp carbonation. I dig this beer in contrast to the IPA’s and impy’s I’ve been sipping

750ml bottle from the Downers Grove, IL, Binny’s Beverage Depot: This poured a very pale yellow body with a slender head that became a film in the blink of an eye. The aroma is wheaty - bready - with a light lemony tartness. The flavor delivers that bready malt flavor, but that soon bows out in favor of a serious tartness. While not as face-puckering as Kindl’s beer, my first Berliner Weisse, it manages to sour the mouth and tongue, finishing on a dry, peppery note. Very enjoyable brew.

Bottle - Honey yellow pour with a small white head. Smells dry and tart with a bit of sour citrus--lemon and grapefruit. Taste is sour lemon and apple that transitions into dry, tart grapes. Nice dry mineral finish with a bit of aspirin. Would actually like the fruit scaled back a bit on this one, but overall it’s pretty good. Tart, crisp, and pretty refreshing.
