Hottenroth Berliner Weisse is brewed in memory of Fred & Sarah Hottenroth, our founder, Patrick Rue’s grandparents. This tart, German-style Berliner Weisse is as authentic as it gets. We use lactobacillus and a hint of brettanomyces to sour this very unusual, low gravity wheat beer. To cut the tartness for those with sweeter tastes, raspberry or woodruff syrup is a traditional way to sweeten the beer. Almost an extinct style, we hope to help revive the Berliner Weisse in memory of two great people.

Bottle from Kasey, thanks! Pours the color of lemon juice and little to zero head. Nose is super tart and some medium funk aromas. Flavor is tart and mildly funky and lemony. Refreshing and light. One of the few of the style I have had and it’s great. Almost more like some kind of soda.

Bottle share at Leighton’s, many thanks to Kenny for this one. As ’Bruery Terreux Hottenroth Berliner Weisse’, 3.1%. Opaque hazy pale yellow, no head. Aroma is eggy, pungent, solvent, some white chocolate, stink bomb. Body is light, soft carbonation, a little foamy. Taste is thin, bready, more of that sulphur, white chocolate, thin citrus. I’m struggling to think of things I like about this.

Bottleshare at Mr Smith’s pad. Hazy gold beer, a very short lived white head. Some egg on the nose. Palate is light, dry and has decent fine carbonation. Light tangy citrus, orange and lemon. A bitter and wonky funk underneath. Light semi dry finish. Pretty lame all round.

Big bottle shared in the LDN - big thanks Kenny ’Summer of ’76’ Mitchell. Pours hazy gold with a fizzy, fast-fading white head. The nose holds zesty lemon, citrus peel, tangy wheat, light funk. Light sweet flavour with lemony tartness, dried wheat, some salty bite, hay. Light bodied with fizzy carbonation. Clean and dry on the finish, with quick tartness, more lemony bite, some rindy bitterness. Pretty decent stuff.
