Brewed in memory of my Grandparents (Fred and Sarah Hottenroth), this tart German-style Berliner Weisse is as authentic as it gets. We used lactobacillus and a hint of brettanomyces to sour this very unusual, low gravity wheat beer. To cut the tartness for those with sweeter tastes, raspberry or woodruff syrup is a traditional way to sweeten the beer. Almost an extinct style, we hope to help revive the Berliner Weisse in memory of two great people (ABV 3.1%, IBU 2, SRM 2, Format 30L kegs).

Bottle from Kasey, thanks! Pours the color of lemon juice and little to zero head. Nose is super tart and some medium funk aromas. Flavor is tart and mildly funky and lemony. Refreshing and light. One of the few of the style I have had and it’s great. Almost more like some kind of soda.

Draft at Lazy Dog. Pours hazy yellow gold with a fizzy white head. Tastes fruity, like pears, sour apples, tart lemonade, and dry soda. Light body and low/medium carbonation. Smells funky, like sour fermenting fruit, and old yeast.

Golden with a slight orange tint. Very low head retention. Tart and mildly soapy aroma. Very tart up front bit dissipates rather quickly. Great beer for the style!

On tap @ The Distillery / Savannah GA --- Cloudy pale gold with a full white head cover, no lace. Taste is wheat malt that is swept aside by a full wave of sour in the palate that continues consistently to a lingering sour finish. Good traditional Weissbier, thirst quenching, refreshing, reviving on a hot July afternoon in Savannah.

An interesting brew for sure. pours a fizzy bright orange with a thin sparkling white head that dies instantly. The nose has mild acidic citrus aromas as well as bready malt notes and slight sour notes that accompany a candied banana. A bit sweet and sour in the middle with a heavy mouthfeel that ends with lingering but mild acetic sourness and a touch of astringent bitterness. An odd but tasty brew

Ranks braid. #1250. Sourness an sweet at the same time. Mid taste has went from flatlined dullness to a pleasing and interesting lens of weak candy banana, wheat and acidic lemon. The acidity isn’t really there. Banana becomes a bit more apparent when warmer but the sourness is retained. Mildly complex and highly enjoyable. A good beer to enjoy while executing magpies.
