4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Big smoky nose, mesquite? Syrup comes out more once swirled. The unapologetic combination of sweet and smoky comes across like great barbecue. Chewy with an earthy finish.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Thanks kiefdog for the share. Pours brown with a tan head that leaves big Belgian lace. Nose is smoke, slight earthy sweetness, smoked malts, hints of vanilla, hints of peat, and some booze. Flavor is smoked malts, peat, earth, light maple, band-aid esque smoke, some dark sweetness, and booze. Light in body for the style. The maple and smoked malts come through with an earthiness and a vague sweetness.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle shared by bmanning. Served in a Bruery tulip.
Pours a dark chestnut brown with a good off-white to tan head with a few spots of lacing on the way down and a thin collar throughout. The nose carries some tobacco initially and is eventually followed up with some oak, light maple, and a bit of smoked malt. Flavor picks up a lot of the smoke along with some maple in the background and has a general earthy feeling. Medium body with a dry, smokey finish. Good carbonation. Worth a try, but not as good as I was expecting.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
750ml bottle courtesy of 46er3498. thanks, tom! pours a deep, dark, chestnut brown with a thick, creamy, khaki head with excellent retention that leaves smooth sheets of lace on the glass. aroma is great with big notes of smoked malt, ashy charcoal, and campfire smoke backed by subtle notes of maple syrup, burnt waffles, roasted almonds, and oak with subtle notes of toasted rye, vanilla, figs. flavor is superb as well and offers a great balance of smoked malts, cigar ash, and charred oak with sweet maple syrup, brown sugar, and brandied figs with subtle notes of caraway seeds, cocoa, and vanilla as it warms. palate is full bodied with smooth carbonation and a lingering, smokey but sweet finish. overall, a great collaboration brew.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: JUL 29, 2011 Draught sample. Aromas of smoke, syrup, and oak. Taste is smoky, vanilla from the oak, and some mice malty maple notes. Pours a brown color with a light tan head. Overall a nice effort, with the smokiness just right, a good collaboration brew.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours deep mahogany with very little light passing through except when held up to light, where the edges look clear copper. The head is thick and creamy, leaving great lacing.
First thing I notice in the nose is actually the smoked malts with the maple syrup taking a little bit of a back seat. There is a mixture of spiciness from oak and rye.
Taste starts with the smoked malts again but the rye lends a great texture to the feel and actually transitions into a definite maple syrup character, especially in the finish which also shows some heat going down.
The mouthfeel is super smooth and creamy with the rye doing its job well and keeping the smoked malts from drying the feel out too much.
I really enjoyed this beer. It does have a few different things going on, and the first few sips seemed disjointed, but I actually think it comes together well.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
750 mL bottle shared at the July Santa Cruz tasting. Pours darkest amber with a small tan head. Aroma is oaky and rather smoky too, with some hard roasted malts and a hint of acetone. A little mapley and molassesy too. Flavor is maple syrup and oak, slightly meaty with the smoke, sweet and boozy but with a rather medium body. Some good flavors and complexity but it needs more body to back it up.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Tasted at the Beer Baron in Livermore. When I heard this was a Bruery beer with maple syrup, I was expecting a sweet, gooey, mess of a beer but I was pleasantly surprised. This poured dark brown with a creamy tan head. The aroma is nutty and chocolaty with mild notes of oak and dark fruit. The flavor is nice with pronounced oak and some nuttiness and heavy alcohol. There’s an earthy bitterness throughout for some balance. It has a great oaky finish. I got some raisins, but very little maple syrup actually.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at the Bruery. Pours dark brown with just a bit of beige/tan head. Aroma is smoke. Taste is smoke, smoke and smoke. I was hoping for more maple on this and it was unfortunately completely overwhelmed by the smoke. Totally palate wrecking...everything tasted like liquid smoke after drinking this one.
