We take Mash, and then add Portola Coffee Labís Lucio Delgado (Columbia) at a rate of 1 lbs. per 10 gallons. This has contributed an intense coffee aroma and some additional body, with flavors of raspberry jam, tart pineapple and maple brown sugar. Why did we release two versions of this beer, one with coffee, one without? Mash & Grind is certainly delicious on its own, but we deliberately sought a strong coffee aroma and flavor so you could try your own blending, if you like. Try adding "Mash & Grind" to "Mash" (or the other way around) until you find your ideal blend. Of course opening two bottles of high ABV beer is recommended when among friends.

750 ml bottle poured into a Bruery tulip. 2014 edition at 13.7% ABV. Dark brown with two fingers of light tan head. Aromas of caramel, coffee, bourbon, toasty notes, light oak. Tastes of caramel, sweet roasty coffee, bourbon, brown sugar. Medium body with a dry finish. No alcohol on the finish. Pretty well masked alcohol for 13.7%. Seems like there might be a hint of infection but hard to say, not enough to detract though.

Almost no head; dark brown, reddish hightlighted beer. Pure cold coffee nose, beer remaining hidden for some time. Cold coffee, sharpened with alcohol. Sharp, hot, astringent. For an utter coffee abstainer as me, unpalatable.

Brown pour with a tan head. The aroma is full of coffee and brown sugar. The flavor is more coffee beer than barleywine, with a lot of coffee coming through up front. However, you can also taste the base beer with some toffee, caramel , oak and brown sugar. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. I havenít looked at my old rating and havenít had regular Mash in a while, but I seem to like this one better than the base beer.

Aroma is a good amount of coffee and sweetness. Taste is more barleywine. Sweet caramel. Surprisingly light for a Bruery beer at 13.8%.

UPDATED: AUG 3, 2015 750 mL bottle shared with ebone1988. 2015 vintage. This one is very similar to the 2013, but itís thicker, more viscous. The coffee is much more prevalent when itís fresh. Lots of brown sugar in the flavor, and a good hop as well. Way better than with age. Original rating: 7 4 8 4 15 2013 vintage. The pour is a medium brown with a lighter tan/off white head that seems rather fizzy. It falls down to a tiny ring rather quickly and leaves no lace. The aroma is dominated by coffee. In fact, thatís all I smell. There might be a hint of caramel on the back end, but thatís it. All coffee. The flavor is big coffee. There is a lot more happening here. Good toffee and some light dark fruits are solid around the coffee backbone. There is a solid booze presence on the back as well. The mouth feel is a bit light, and the carbonation doesnít really do a whole lot for it because itís light as well. The aftertaste is lingeringly coffee and bitter with a touch of booze. Not bad.

Aroma is fresh brewed coffee, coffee and caramel dominates the flavor and finishes with chocolate. A great follow up to Mash.

750ml. Pleasant coffee aroma. Smooth caramel bourbon notes. Coffee really works well here. Very drinkable for the ABV. Sugary, but still drinks clean. Brown sugar, coffee, bourbon. The bourbon is mild and restrained. Really good.
