We take Mash, and then add Portola Coffee Lab’s Lucio Delgado (Columbia) at a rate of 1 lbs. per 10 gallons. This has contributed an intense coffee aroma and some additional body, with flavors of raspberry jam, tart pineapple and maple brown sugar. Why did we release two versions of this beer, one with coffee, one without? Mash & Grind is certainly delicious on its own, but we deliberately sought a strong coffee aroma and flavor so you could try your own blending, if you like. Try adding "Mash & Grind" to "Mash" (or the other way around) until you find your ideal blend. Of course opening two bottles of high ABV beer is recommended when among friends.

750ml bottle. Poured a deep and cloudy amber color (almost a brownish) and a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of coffee grounds, caramel, fruity, wood, and earth. Tastes of vanilla, caramel, brown sugary sweetness, coffee, and citrus. More coffee in the aroma vs. the tastes with the alcohol overall well hidden.

Bottle. Pour is clear brown with a small off-white head. Aroma is sweet caramel malt and light espresso notes. A hint of bitter chocolate and herbs as well. Flavor is caramel malt, herbal coffee notes, and light bitter coffee. Very green and vegetal. Hides alcohol well. Strange flavor.

Bomber - Fairly similar to regular Mash but with the obvious coffee notes. I found the plain version better. Coffee is not so over the top that this becomes unenjoyable though. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Sample at Kurtkeller 005: Coffee-tastic 01 on 02/08/2014. This beer pours a cloudy reddish-brown color with a medium thick cream-colored head that dissipates gradually. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roast coffee, malt and grassy hops. Full-bodied with a subtle woody character and flavors of black coffee, roast malt and earthy hops. The finish is roasty with a caramel mocha aftertaste. Pretty good all around.

ICEatALAMO (944) - Troy, Michigan, USA - JAN 25, 2014
Bottle. The pour is amber. The aroma is a good mix of bourbon and coffee. The taste is a little disappointing overall. The mix just doesn't work for me. Average, like regular mash better. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Ataraxia (377) - Massachusetts, USA - JAN 23, 2014
Clear, deep amber brown with thin beige lacing. Sweet boozy aroma of roasted coffee bean, sticky toffee, sugary milk chocolate, charred oak, dates, and hints of vanilla. Heavy sweetness accentuated by the bourbon barrel character but finishes quite bitter. Carbonation is a bit too lively and the palate ever so slightly thin despite the full body. Feels fairly boozy, with a residual medicinal taste in the back.

Bottle thanks to Kevin. Pours a clear brown with small beige head that lasts leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is strong coffee bean and roast. Medium mouthfeel with rich coffee flavor and light roast nuttiness. Very good, really enjoyed this.

In short: Some kind of boozy sugary barrel aged dark ale overwhelmed by used coffee filter flavors. Meh.
How: Bottle shared at post HF FoFA 2013 party.
The look: Cloudy burgundy body topped by a small tan head.
In long: Intense nose of used coffee filter along with some caramel and earthy stuff. Not the type of inviting roasted coffee beans I like to get from a coffee forward beer. In mouth the beer has a disappointingly not-so-full body for a beer of this size along with a medium carbonation. Taste is brutal. A dominant old black coffee flavor, hot booze, sugary caramel, a good amount of roast, some vanilla soaked bourbon oak. With all the roast and coffee this beer felt more like an Imperial Stout than the Barley Wine it claims to be. But whatever this was, it wasn’t my style of beer at all, drinking a full bottle must be a chore. I think whoever go to the authorities and show their Bruery Reserve Society Membership should be granted a handicapped parking pass.
