2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
A- pours a murky diarrhea brown (seriously) with a half hearted light tan head. Appearance is a turn off from the get go. No lacing. S- cheap, weak coffee and grains come through immediately. Oak, plastics and hops are there and don’t ultimately help this brew. Barelywine characteristics are so weak. Tootsie rolls seem prominent but so phony - like an added "flavoring." Not a lot of decadence. M- medium tacky body that drys out the mouth. T- follows suit with the aromas. Plastic toffee and coffee blanket the tongue. Stale, day old coffee that one might find at a bad truck stop or the reception area of a Jiffy Lube. Sour wood. Some grains and hops but so muddled. Everything runs together here. Bitter towards the end with some vegetal quality. A mild alcohol burn will appeal to the 12 percenters out there but that is all. O- sorry to rag on this beer so much but sheesh, what were they thinking?Hopefully I just got a bad bottle. Nothing about this beer stands out. A very average beer from an otherwise good brewery.

I’m gonna go ahead and guess Portola Coffee Labs makes some kick ass coffee. Wonderful blast of fresh coffee, bourbon, oak and malt. The coffee cuts right through the barrel sweetness from the "base" Mash, tempering both the sweetness and the alcohol. Ridiculously smooth, deeeeelicious, and just awesome in every way. Before yesterday I didn’t know this existed and today it’s my new favorite beer from one of my favorite breweries."

Bottle: The aroma consists of coffee, toffee, fruit, and a touch of vanilla. It pours a cloudy orangish-brown with a small beige head that quickly fades to a thin film outlined by a thin ring. The flavor starts with a caramel, chocolate, and a hint of fruit. The finish has a ton of coffee, roasted nuts, vanilla, and a touch of bourbon. It’s medium bodied with light-moderate carbonation. Overall, I would have expected I would like the coffee version better. This is very good, but I like regular Mash slightly better.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
750 ml bottle.
Aroma is very nice and fairly coffee forward. Nice background make note of caramel, toffee and toasted bread with a hint of chocolate. Hints of alcohol. Coffee ads a nice fruitiness and hints of nuts.
Pours a murky brown with some burnt amber notes and a somewhat thin, tan head that recedes fairly quickly to the edges. No lacing and alcohol sheets instead of legs.
Flavor is moderately coffee forward with some nice fruity and nut notes. Moderate caramel and toffee with a nice light sweetness. Faint toasted bread and chocolate. Light bourbon notes that become more prevalent as it warms with faint oak. Alcohol also becomes more noticeable as it warms. Hints of dark fruit. Finish is coffee, caramel and toasted bread with some bourbon - the breakfast of champions. Medium light bitterness.
Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Not as silky as its regular version. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth.
Overall, this may be my favorite Bruery beer of 2013. The coffee works really well with the base beer and the sweet malt character. Bourbon compliments nicely. Difficult to tell the base was Mash as the coffee really changes the beer.

2013 batch. Ruby brown pour with off white head. Nose is coffee, bell pepper, vegetile, dark fruits, plum, cookie dough, bourbon. Flavor is faded coffee, booze, dark fruit, still a bit hot, vanilla. Dry and warm finish. Coffee has started to turn a bit off on this guy.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Looks about the same as Mash, possibly with a tad less sticky lace. Even after a year, the coffee remains fresh and bold -- nary a green pepper in smell or sight. Coffee augments the caramely base rather than overpowering it. Good stuff.
