We take Mash, and then add Portola Coffee Lab’s Lucio Delgado (Columbia) at a rate of 1 lbs. per 10 gallons. This has contributed an intense coffee aroma and some additional body, with flavors of raspberry jam, tart pineapple and maple brown sugar. Why did we release two versions of this beer, one with coffee, one without? Mash & Grind is certainly delicious on its own, but we deliberately sought a strong coffee aroma and flavor so you could try your own blending, if you like. Try adding "Mash & Grind" to "Mash" (or the other way around) until you find your ideal blend. Of course opening two bottles of high ABV beer is recommended when among friends.

750ml bottle in a tasting glass. Pours hazy, ruby/brown with a lacy, beige head. Aroma of coffee, bourbon, caramel and toffee malts plus hints of bitterness. Flavor the same with a nice blend of the coffee and the strong malt profile. Smooth texture. A good beer.

The (not so) shit beer tasting at Leightons stratospheric flat. Hazy deep red - amber beer. Big pale cream coloured head. Coconut nose. Palate is airy and light. Airy malt, little cream, light dried fruits, spice, earthy coffee. Light coconut and light fruity bourbon. The coffee really is not adding anything to the base beer here, in fact it is an unneccessary distraction. But overall still solid and very enjoyable.

Another winner from the Bruery. Aroma is oddly bitter with coffee, dirty grass, and malty chocolate. Pours muddy brown with ugly wisps of blonde. Taste is super sweet with cappuccino, brown sugar, oak, and white chocolate. Just tasty and sweeter as it finishes. The coffee is all there but it doesn’t feel dark or heavy. Nice.

Bottle at the Night of Garbage, thanks to Kenny. It pours cloudy red-brown with a small yellow-white head. The nose is wood, coffee, toast, marmite, cocoa, chocolate powder, mustiness, earth and umami notes. The taste is bitter-sweet, wood, toffee, toast, coffee, roasty, some acidity, earth, toffee and dark chocolate bounty. Full body and fine, prickly carbonation. Not sure the coffee improves the beer really. Quite big and ballsy, but tasty enough.

Bottle shared at the Night of Garbage - thanks to Mr. Bruery, Kenneth. Pours clear amber-brown with a foamy beige head. Lots of coffee in the nose, some earth, cocoa. Medium to big sweet flavor, more coffee, some maple syrup, chocolate, honey, burnt toffee. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation and a creamy texture. Warming finish, quite sweet, some pancakes with maple syrup, milk chocolate, mild coffee, a bit of earthy bitterness. Very nice.

UPDATED: DEC 12, 2013 Thanks Mike. An interesting aroma comes off this one. A lot of coffee and caramel. It had a big boozy factor with the 12.5% a slow sipper for sure.

UPDATED: NOV 17, 2014 Bottle: Thanks, Mike! Murky mahogany & dingy brown pour with a beige head that transforms to a thin ring in just moments. Aroma is mostly made of roasted, slightly astringent coffee beans, somewhat acrid in nature. Light oak & booze underneath, with even lighter notes of caramel & buttery toffee. But the cold diner-esque coffee vibe is the dominant aroma. Taste is the same way, overrun by coffee, lightly sweet & backed with a bit of caramel & toffee that peaks through from the base barleywine. I get some notes of anise, cocoa, & oak occasionally, but again, it seems the coffee addition has obliterated the base beer. Lightly astringent & sharp in the finish. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t my jam, either. Expected greatness, turns out it was merely decent.

Bottle. Pours a hazy, muddy brown with a khaki head. Aroma is coffee, vanilla, toffee, coconut. Taste is sweet. Vanilla and marshmallow notes really come through now. Full bodied and sticky. Good.

750 ml bottle shared by brew3crew. Pours a dark cola brown color with a medium sized creamy beige head. The aroma and flavor have big coffee notes, bourbon, vanilla, roast, some booze, smooth mouth feel, wood, a mild dark fruit character, alcohol is warming. How will this age?

750 ml bottle to taster (shared by brew3crew). Looks good for the style; a dark amberish brown with light beige head and lively carbonation. Smells solid; BIG coffee with notes of malt and a bit of tartness. Tastes like it smells with a solid mouthfeel. Enjoyable.
