We take Mash, and then add Portola Coffee Lab’s Lucio Delgado (Columbia) at a rate of 1 lbs. per 10 gallons. This has contributed an intense coffee aroma and some additional body, with flavors of raspberry jam, tart pineapple and maple brown sugar. Why did we release two versions of this beer, one with coffee, one without? Mash & Grind is certainly delicious on its own, but we deliberately sought a strong coffee aroma and flavor so you could try your own blending, if you like. Try adding "Mash & Grind" to "Mash" (or the other way around) until you find your ideal blend. Of course opening two bottles of high ABV beer is recommended when among friends.

750 ml bottle shared by dudeabide- thanks again, Nate! Pours a semi-cloudy amber with a small beige head. Aroma of nice fresh roasted coffee, oak, caramel, bourbon, toasted sugar, and earth. The flavor is mostly the same but doesn’t work on quite the same level. Definitely some warmth to this one. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a toasty, earthy, warming mouthfeel. Nice barrel-aged coffee barley wine.

UPDATED: OCT 10, 2013 Bottle:   Deep dark caramel, brownish, dirty, thin frothy off-white head, spotty lacing.   Amazingly strong coffee nose.   Very fresh, slight roasted malts.   No way could you think of the aroma as being a Barley Wine.   Strong roastiness, lots of coffee, but after that there is a bunch of heavy rich caramel biscuitiness that is an English Barley Wine.   This is a crazy bastardization of a beer.   Strong coffee, very strong coffee, but smooth, with a big English Barley wine character not to be matched.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate to full.   This is a very unique and different brew.   Very coffee oriented, but also strong maltiness.   This is unlike any other coffee beer.   This is first and foremost a big ass English Barley Wine that is infused with a strong coffee aspect.   I don’t thing too many could get away with such a great balance, but this one works.   Heaps and heaps of coffee, yet not bitter, sweet, malty, strong, and clean, very robust, roasty, and simply different!   Smooth, rich, roasty, lots of coffee, without being overly bitter, damn, who wouldn’t love this shit.   Not so much of a Barley Wine as a Coffee Beer (whatever the fuck that is), but this certainly is that.   Yeah, this is a COFFEE BEER.   Nobody can define what the fuck that is... but let me tell you, in the land of a bazillion different beers, nobody has done this over here (Seattle).   Props to Bruery and this creation.   BIG BALLS for such a big Coffee beer, on the back of an English Barley Wine.   It F*cking works, a-ight!

Bottle at the Night of Garbage, thanks to Kenny. It pours cloudy red-brown with a small yellow-white head. The nose is wood, coffee, toast, marmite, cocoa, chocolate powder, mustiness, earth and umami notes. The taste is bitter-sweet, wood, toffee, toast, coffee, roasty, some acidity, earth, toffee and dark chocolate bounty. Full body and fine, prickly carbonation. Not sure the coffee improves the beer really. Quite big and ballsy, but tasty enough.

Pour out of 750 mL bottle, slight oak, big coffee, hints of earth, big coffee, touch of dark cocoa, hints of dark slight funky coffee. Tatse was weird funky earth, slight funky grounds, hints of folgers grounds, hints of earth, finishing fairly bitter, dry, very coffee grounds. No thanks.

In short: Some kind of boozy sugary barrel aged dark ale overwhelmed by used coffee filter flavors. Meh.
How: Bottle shared at post HF FoFA 2013 party.
The look: Cloudy burgundy body topped by a small tan head.
In long: Intense nose of used coffee filter along with some caramel and earthy stuff. Not the type of inviting roasted coffee beans I like to get from a coffee forward beer. In mouth the beer has a disappointingly not-so-full body for a beer of this size along with a medium carbonation. Taste is brutal. A dominant old black coffee flavor, hot booze, sugary caramel, a good amount of roast, some vanilla soaked bourbon oak. With all the roast and coffee this beer felt more like an Imperial Stout than the Barley Wine it claims to be. But whatever this was, it wasn’t my style of beer at all, drinking a full bottle must be a chore. I think whoever go to the authorities and show their Bruery Reserve Society Membership should be granted a handicapped parking pass.

750ml bottle, thanks to FlandersNed! Shared with local ratebeerians. 2013 bottle. Half hazy brown / red color. Thin off-white grayish head. Spread and dots of lace. Amazing huge coffee roast, fresh ground nose. Very nice vanilla. Aromas work awesomely with each other. Smooth, crisp lighter carbonation. More dry finish. Moderate bitter taste, minimal sweet, nice dryness. Awesome coffee barley wine. Delicious vanilla and coffee aroma, and a nice big bitterness, nearly no sweetness. Awesome stuff. So good.

(750ml bottle) clearish deep copper, fine offwhite bubbles. Nose of sweet cream, fresh coffee, marshmallow, peanut shells, less complex than regular Mash but smells better, rich. Taste of sweet coffee, light vanilla, acidic, cream, light roast, creamy/sweet finish.

750 ml bottle shared by brew3crew. Pours a dark cola brown color with a medium sized creamy beige head. The aroma and flavor have big coffee notes, bourbon, vanilla, roast, some booze, smooth mouth feel, wood, a mild dark fruit character, alcohol is warming. How will this age?
