We take Mash, and then add Portola Coffee Labís Lucio Delgado (Columbia) at a rate of 1 lbs. per 10 gallons. This has contributed an intense coffee aroma and some additional body, with flavors of raspberry jam, tart pineapple and maple brown sugar. Why did we release two versions of this beer, one with coffee, one without? Mash & Grind is certainly delicious on its own, but we deliberately sought a strong coffee aroma and flavor so you could try your own blending, if you like. Try adding "Mash & Grind" to "Mash" (or the other way around) until you find your ideal blend. Of course opening two bottles of high ABV beer is recommended when among friends.

Brown pour with a small khaki head. Rich coffee, caramel, and vanilla. Spice, some bourbon, and more coffee. Coffee dominates the flavor. Caramel sweetness, a but of chocolate, spice, bourbon, and nice vanilla. Hints of dark fruit as it warms.

Aroma is a good amount of coffee and sweetness. Taste is more barleywine. Sweet caramel. Surprisingly light for a Bruery beer at 13.8%.

750 mL bottle shared with ebone1988. 2013 vintage. The pour is a medium brown with a lighter tan/off white head that seems rather fizzy. It falls down to a tiny ring rather quickly and leaves no lace. The aroma is dominated by coffee. In fact, that's all I smell. There might be a hint of caramel on the back end, but that's it. All coffee. The flavor is big coffee. There is a lot more happening here. Good toffee and some light dark fruits are solid around the coffee backbone. There is a solid booze presence on the back as well. The mouth feel is a bit light, and the carbonation doesn't really do a whole lot for it because it's light as well. The aftertaste is lingeringly coffee and bitter with a touch of booze. Not bad. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Aroma is fresh brewed coffee, coffee and caramel dominates the flavor and finishes with chocolate. A great follow up to Mash.

750ml. Pleasant coffee aroma. Smooth caramel bourbon notes. Coffee really works well here. Very drinkable for the ABV. Sugary, but still drinks clean. Brown sugar, coffee, bourbon. The bourbon is mild and restrained. Really good.

Bottle.Muddy maroon -- a melted burnt umber crayon. Half a finger of dense, Nesquik-colored head fizzles away slowly. Lots of milk chocolate in the nose. Vanilla, lots of toffee and spicy light roast coffee as well. Smooth. Coffee is more pronounced in the flavor. Tangy toffee settles into the sides of the tongue. Soft oak, a hint of green apple, a touch of vanilla. Smooth blend -- the coffee and vanilla make an interesting pair. Quite a bit of boozy warmth. Moderate prickles of carbonation in a medium body. Despite the alcohol content, itís fairly light on the tongue. Not too bitter. Much better than Mash, the coffee adds quite a bit to this brew and the blend is smoother. Very nice.

750 ml bottle. Date of 10/27/2014. Dark Amber color with bubbly head. Aroma is big on coffee with mild level bourbon with a mild amount of oak. The flavor is bourbon forward without the alcohol or massive warming after the sip. The main base is toffee and caramel. I wish I would have tried just the Mash base first but I am always hesitant to let any coffee brews sit so I decide to open this now. I got to say just enough coffee-bourbon - toffee balance. I really enjoyed sipping. Much more manageable when the brew is under 13%!!!

Canít believe how much less I like this one than the original. Iím a bit of a coffee snob, so stale, bitter dried out coffee was all I could really get out of this. Almost overwhelmed the excellent base beer.

Bottle - Pours rosy brown with a filmy light tan head. Nose is boozy and sharp with coffee grounds, sweet bready malt, and a bit of sweet bourbon. Taste is codes grounds, not as pungent as Iíd like, with sweet bready malt, caramel and bourbon, and a light coffee finish. Slick and medium-bodied.

I love coffee beers. This one is unique, but excellent as well. A good beer to have when you want to grub out.
