An English Barleywine aged in Bourbon barrels, Mash is an intense yet balanced beer with notes of burnt caramel, toasted bread, ripe pear, dried figs, vanilla, toasted coconut and finishes with oak tannin. This has become an instant favorite around the brewery due to its balance, subtle complexities and overwhelming deliciousness.

I had this on tab from the bruery but that day it left less of impression compared to the Bruery’s top tier offings I sampled that day. Fast forward to last night after drinking FW 805 during the fight I opened a bottle of mash chilled to perfection and it was excellent look, smell, body , and taste all rate a low to mid A IMHO. If you can find it try it you’ll not be disappointed if you like Barley Wine beers.

Bottle. Pours a hazy amber with a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has sweet grains and bourbon with a touch of caramel. Flavor has notes of grains and caramel supported by toffee and bourbon.

Mash ’14. Draft at the Bruery. Pours clear copper with a fizzy beige head. Tastes like sweet dark fruits, raisins, roasted malt, booze, chocolate. Light/medium body and low carbonation. Smells like raisins, dark fruits, booze, and a hint of ashy wood.

My favorite barrel-aged barleywine. Alcohol is well-hidden, all things considered. Nice sweet toffee and bread notes with vanilla and stewed fruit. Light up the fire and chill out for a long winter’s nap.

Bottle. Bubbly. Lots of foam springs up as the dark burgundy liquid flows -- about one inch of tan fluff. Fairly clear, scarlet with sunlight. Tons of ethanol in the nose, like sniffing bourbon. Caramel, maple, vanilla bean, burnt sugar. Fairly sweet. Nice oak. Smooth blend in the flavor. Again, bourbon-heavy, tons of oak, vanilla and alcohol. Moderate earthy bitterness. Heat lingers on sides of the tongue. A little lacking complexity. Maybe some dark cherry sweetness. Carbonation Is low and dies quickly. At the end of the glass, it’s almost flat. Sticky, sugary medium. Bigger alcohol flavor than feel. Almost more like drinking bourbon than beer. Decent, smooth, bourbon heavy but not intense. I’ll probably enjoy the coffee version more.

The beer is a deep rosy brown with a tan head. The liquid is quite clear with no apparent sediment. There’s a lot of nice bouncing around in the aroma. I’m getting toffee, molasses, vanilla, mild citrus, coconut, caramel and dates. It’s maybe a bit too sweet and simple, without quite as much depth and chewiness as you might want, but it’s not too hot and there’s a lot of very pleasant interplay of malt and bourbon. The taste starts big and sweet with coconut, vanilla and toffee/butterscotch/caramel, and then has a spicy, woody middle and lingering oaky finish. A little bit of booze at the end. Mouthfeel is medium full. Could be a bit chewier. It’s a solid barrel-aged barleywine, but it just doesn’t have the darker, richer notes of the top of the style.

Another mess of a Bruery beer. It’s a good thing they only subject their reserve society to this stuff. Too big. Bitter finish, thick syrupy pour. Not my thing. Bottle shared at tasting.

Bottle at Brony Tasting, DC. Clean brown. Soapy foam. Big sweet, under fermented malt aroma. Peppery sweet, ruddy malt. Eh, alright.

Bottle I brought to the DC Tasting. Clear amber with off-white head. Aromas of dark fruit, caramel, toffee. Tastes of caramel, dark fruit, light whiskey. Medium body with a dry finish.
