Bruery Description:
Mélange #1 was the first in our line of barrel aged beer blends and continues to be one of our favorites. A curious blend of our bourbon barrel aged stout, Black Tuesday, along with our Flemish-style sour red ale, Oude Tart, this beer is unique and delightful. Forging flavors of toasty oak, vanilla and toffee along with notes of leather and dark fruit, both the full bodied essence of the bourbon barrel aged ale and the sour quality of our wild ale are present in this well rounded beer.

Bottle shared by drabmuh. Thanks Matt! I really had no idea what to expect when I first heard of this beer. I just couldn’t fathom how two awesome beers, Black Tuesday and Oude Tart, could be blended together to create anything remotely palatable. I’ve been wrong before. The beer is brown / black with a decent sized head that leaves copious lacing all over the glass. Like Sour in the Rye, this one brings the yeast and bugs. And those who know me know that I do enjoy my yeast and bugs. The flavor brings oak, bourbon, roast, sour cherries, funk, chocolate. Wow. This is one of the most interesting (good) beers I’ve had (Bud Clamato was pretty interesting too). The beer seems to be comprised more of Oude Tart than Black Tuesday, but they both shine through nicely. I can’t believe how tasty this is. I’m in disbelief, as I can’t imagine this combination working so well. The feel is medium to full bodied and brings an acetic finish. Kudos to Patrick Rue for his impressive ingenuity and creativity. The marriage of these two beers was once incomprehensible to me, and now I find myself longing for more.

moderate-high carbonation. the aromas are so mixed and separate. alternating between the sharp acidity of Oude tart and caramel/dark fruit notes of the BT. when it was cold it was so alcohol hot but as it warms it evens out which seems contrary. That’s it-cold is harsh, acidic, hot, unbalanced; but warmer is much more pleasant. some residual sweetness and vanilla at the end.
