Bruery Description:
Mélange #1 was the first in our line of barrel aged beer blends and continues to be one of our favorites. A curious blend of our bourbon barrel aged stout, Black Tuesday, along with our Flemish-style sour red ale, Oude Tart, this beer is unique and delightful. Forging flavors of toasty oak, vanilla and toffee along with notes of leather and dark fruit, both the full bodied essence of the bourbon barrel aged ale and the sour quality of our wild ale are present in this well rounded beer.

Forgetfu Tasting at ChrisOs. Very hazy deep amber beer, good fluffy pale cream colour head. Palate is airy and crispy. Fine carbonation. Pleasant cherry and light wood. Good tangy dried fruits. Light airy cream. Tangy cherry turning to bitterish cherry skin. All the while there is the mellow dark malt background. The Oude Tart seems to have really dominated the Black Tuesday, wasn’t expecting that! Light dry finish with a bitterish cherry linger. Nicely joined up.

Bottle shared in London. Pours clear, amber-brown with a frothy, tan head. Nice aroma with plenty of dark, ripe and lightly tangy fruits, prunes, cherries. Light-medium sweet flavor with subtle metallic notes, bittersweet berries, bread, earth, alcohol. Full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Warming finish with rich, ripe berries, raisins, cherries, grapes, booze, earth. So so.

A: The pour is not exactly the most beautiful of things, like most of the Melange series. Sort of turbid and murky brown with a fair amount of red highlights and a quick-to-vanish tan head. S: I pick up the chocolate notes from Black Tuesday right away. This gives the beer a pleasant richness and sweetness that goes along nicely with some roasted malt flavors underneath. The young Flemish sour provides some mild cherry notes as well as a hint of tartness. T: The tartness is subtle on the flavor and is mainly in the form of cherries. The chocolate and roast components don’t seem to be quite as powerful as they were on the nose, at least initially. But as the beer warms, the imperial stout starts to dominate. A decent amount of alcohol comes through on the palate as well. M: The body is medium to full with a moderate level of carbonation. A fairly smooth and creamy feel on the tongue overall. D: I have mixed feelings about this one. I liked it, but it didn’t really wow me. Nonetheless, an interesting blend and experiment.

Bottle shared by Kenny at the Pancake Parlour, 10/07/14. Opaque dark amber with a big old beige covering that dissipates then retains. Nose is bitter dark fruit rinds, dates, woody must, soured red berries, spice. Taste comprises tangy dark fruits, tarte red berrues, toffee, light acidic qualities, caramelised sugars, light booze. Medium + body, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a subtle acidic wash. Decent enough stuff if perhaps a little sweet in places.
