3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
750 ml. bottle. Pours a huge, tiny bubbled, white head, of long duration, with sea-foam lacing, over a hazy golden (SRM 5) body.....nose is light pine, light resin, bit of apple, pear....taste initially has a slightly rubbery tone, then sweet malt, leading rapidly to hop spice with pineapple and a bit of licorice, with a lingering hop bitterness and a smidgen of pepper.....mouth feel is light, carbonation low. The very slight off flavors are probably from yeast breakdown, and I have no idea how the bottle was stored prior to my buying it. This is none the less a very nice Belgian Golden Strong Ale, with a light refreshing quality that is quite sneaky, given the alcohol level. BJCP 8/3/14/4/7

Very good belgian strong ale. Has a golden color with a white foam head. Sweet up front with nicely balanced bitters on the back end. Complex but nice balance. Perfect amount of hops for this Belgian Strong.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 9/20
Orange with pale-yellow hues. Beautiful pasty stark-white foam with a whipped-milk consistency. Strong notes of plastic, aspirin, and stewed peaches on the nose with aggressive scents of resinous hops, overripe grapefruit, and honey-drenched mango. Strong presence of borderline-medicinal alcohol. Very sweet and unclean. Dense and creamy carbonation hugs the tongue. Highly inelegant from the get-go, with an overaggressive medley of resinous and acidic hops and brash aspirin. Vague unripe-banana esters beneath. Quite slippery on the tongue, with a pervasive stewed-peach character which magnifies the overtly sugary grapefruit peels and honeyed mango. While certainly heavy on the plastic and rich mango, the hop flavors are commendably bright and explosive, and the aspirin and resinous-goo stop just short of utterly ruining the finish with causticity. Alcohol is felt throughout, severely marring the finish with a scratchy gullet-warming coarseness while deadening all subtleties. The Bruery did just about everything I wouldn’t have done in brewing a Belgian golden. The choice of hops was an unimaginative one (Amarillo and Simcoe, I’m guessing?). Why not a soft and floral hop rather than an overwhelmingly citric, tacky, and resinous varietal? The beer is extremely dirty (plastic, anyone?), as a whole, and much of the flavor has been sacrificed in favor of higher alcohols. Only redeeming aspects are the head retention and mouthfeel. Basically a run-of-the-mill Double IPA fermented with a Belgian yeast strain. Yawn.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Tasting at Papsø
Cloudy blond color; creamy head; very nice sticky lace. It has a very pleasant aroma of fruity hops, grapefruit, some resins, light cream. Malt flavor, very spicy, a bit yeasty, getting astringent at the end. Strong ending bitterness, with bitter oranges. It can be compared to t’Smisje + Dubbel IPA, a crossover. I like it.
