Belgian-style ale, golden and hoppy. Not quite evil, yet not to be trusted, this Golden Ale is effervescent, dry, hoppy and crisp-you’ll want to keep an eye out. (ABV: 8.5%, IBU: 35, SRM: 4, Format: 750 mL bottles and draft)

Enjoyed from a 750ml bottle in a wine glass. The beer pours a fairly clear straw-colored yellow, with a large, dense white head. The nose shows fairly prevalent character of what initially seem to be earthy European noble hops, with indications of the use of piney American hops beginning to come through as the beer warms. These aromas, paired with the Belgian yeast esters, create an interesting melange of notes. The palate shows the spritzy, palate cleansing, dry, and slightly spicy character of the best examples of the Belgian Golden Strong style; with the addition of a substantial amount of flavor hops in the mid-palate and finish. The general feel of the beer is complex and layered, but the flavors didn’t always seem to perfectly match one another; especially with regard to using west coast hop in quantity in the beer’s flavor profile. Overall, very interesting and nicely executed, as with many of the beers from this excellent brewery.

Bottle in cellar. Had at home in my big Rapp snifter. Pours a mild brown with an ample head. Aroma is Belgian sugars, candy, Belgian yeasts, apricot, plums, and earth. Taste is dark fruits first chased by the dark candy sugars, Belgian yeasts, and finishes slight bitter hoppy. Little grassy at the end but good. Medium body, not boozy at all. Well balanced. Enjoyable!

Brown color with tan head. Aroma is candied sugar, caramel malt, spicy yeasts. Some sweetness lying below. Taste is caramel, bananas and apricots (very Belgian), with that spicy fruity finish. Some caramel elements in there. Very good.

Type: 750ml (25.4 oz.) botle Glass: Karl Strauss 26th anniversary tulip glass From: Trader Joe’s in La Mesa (San Diego), Calif. Price: $7.99 Purchased: Nov. 19, 2015 Consumed: Nov. 19, 2015 Misc.: N/A Poured a yellow, golden, clear color with three fingers of fluffy, white head. Lots of bubble streams coming up from the bottom of the glass. Very good sporadic, spiderweb lacing on the sides of the glass. Excellent amount of thick retention all the way down. (Sight - 4.25) Smelled candied Belgian spices, pear, green grapes, green apple, kiwi, grassy hops, honey, herbal hops, cleaning supplies (ammonia?), faint tropical notes (passion fruit?) and slight dry apricot. (Smell - 4.00) Taste wasn’t quite as good as the nose. Got spicy Belgian notes, green apple, pear, honey, grassy hops, boozy candied sugar, peppery Citra rind and boozy, dry ammonia. (Taste - 3.50) Light-to-medium body. Oily texture. Lively-to-fizzy carbonation. Dry, boozy finish. (Feel - 3.50) Was a bit disappointed in this one, but glad I finally tried it. Probably overrated it a tad. just an OK Belgian Strong Pale Ale. (Overall - 3.75) 3.72 84 B

On tap. Hazy golden pour with a couple of fingers of foamy white head. A lot of lacing. Aroma of bananas, cloves, yeast, citrus zest, and a little caramel and toffee. Flavors follows, though it’s slightly milder than I expected. Mostly banana, yeast, orange peel, baking spices. Active carbonation leads to a slightly dry finish with a little booziness coming through at the end as well. Could definitely have a few of these.
