This 2.08% ABV brew was a batch of Hottenroth that took an unexpected turn and did not sour. Fortunately the result was a delicious low-ABV wheat beer brewed with kumquats.

The pour is a cloudy straw color with a small white head. A very strong kumquat aroma and just very citric overall. There is a mild grass and quite a bit of citrus peel aroma. Somewhat reminiscent of orange and grapefruit juice. The flavor starts off with sweet citrus and a mild acidity that intensifies as the beer warms up. Lots and lots of kumquat with a fair amount of grapefruit as well. A touch of grass some yeast and lots of wheat, though not a very malty flavor.

On tap at Hops and Pie poured a cloudy yellow with a lasting white head. Aromas of wheat, kumquats, yeast and straw. Palate was light bodied and crisp with a dry finish. Flavors of straw, yeat and citrus with a crisp dry lingering citrus finish.

Yellow pour. Aroma is loaded with some light citrus, malt, wheat, and a yeasty note. Flavor is kind of bland and all malt driven...I guess for the low alcohol its cool...but I wouldn’t really want to drink it too often.

Sample at Bruery Provisions. Hazy yellow pour with a thin and wispy white head that evaporates quickly to an outer ring. Short strings of lacing. Aroma of citrus, malt and wheat. Light-bodied with a lemony character and notes of bready malt and wheat. The finish is tangy lemons and lingers a bit. Decent overall.

Tap at The Bruery. Sadly, not sour like Hottenroth, which we had back to back. Yummm. This one is cloudy straw with weak foam. Nose is lemon tea, cat pee, cactus, lemon, pineapple, juice box. Taste is doughy, soft, pretty bland. Quick, powdery finish. Club soda palate. Still, refreshing. No obvious brew flaws.

Tap at the Bruery. Cloudy whitish yellow with lace. Tangy tart nose of lemon, kumquat, wheat bread. Wheaty flavor with lemon and a bit of yogurt. Clean, light, crisp and nicely drinkable. Light tartness.

UPDATED: JUN 13, 2012 On tap at Provisions (full pint finally). Pours with a hazed yellow body with a medium sized white head. Aromas are fruity, floral, grainy, mild acidity, zesty, wheat and kumquats. Seems like their is still some lactic acid in the nose in addition to the citric kumquats. Medium esters. Flavors are medium tart, floral, zesty and fruit. Tartness lingers a bit on the palate and makes this beer very thirst quenching. Lively bubbles with a dry, not too thin finish. Very drinkable, insanely characterful for a 2% beer, and very enjoyable.
I’ve had this many times since and felt I should bump up the score. Killer session beer, insanely drinkable and characterful!

"after the first few refreshing tastes, we used the rest of the 22 oz pur as palate ceanser for the big stuff. not bad at all, though. Has it’s place, just didn’t stand up side by side to much bigger beers. Light and refreshing, as 2% abv would imply. Still slightly tart, but nowhere near as much as Hottenroth. The fruit addition is nice, though I wouldnt have been able to pick up kumquat if not in the desciption. The only fault of the beer is the feel. Not in it’s lightness, which makes for a superb summer quencher, but it came of a little gassy. Otherwise a nice change of pace. Even their mistakes are pretty good."
